Polaroid outs two smartphones and a tablet with MediaTek chipsets

Polaroid is known globally for making instant cameras for the last few decades or so. The company is now looking to change its image by entering the smartphone industry with the launch of three new devices – the Cosmo K, Cosmo K Plus and the Jet C7 tablet.

Polaroid Cosmo K

The product line that has just been introduced by the company will most likely be catered towards the budget-oriented segment of the market, with no flashy specifications or bleeding edge technology. The company is keeping it simple and providing devices that are reliable and easy to bank on. As of now, all devices are available in Mexico via thee Telcel mobile carrier. The phones have nothing new to offer in the segment apart from the Polaroid branding.

Specifications of the phones can be considered average at best, with the Cosmo K featuring a 5-inch display, a quad-core 1.3GHz processor, 1GB of RAM, a 13MP main camera on the back and a front-facing 5MP camera. Powering the phone is a 2,800mAh battery unit that will leave room for improvement. The K Plus variant of the Cosmo series comes with the same internals, but instead of a 5-inch screen, comes with a 5.5-inch screen. The tablet Jet C7 will come with a 1GHz quad-core processor, 1GB RAM, a 2,650mAh battery and one 5MP camera on the front and another on the back of the device. It will also feature a 7-inch display. The phones will not make their way to the US, and it seems that the company aims on selling these devices to emerging markets such as Mexico.

All devices will feature Mediatek Chipsets and will be available only at Telcel’s physical stores. There is no word on pricing for the devices as of yet. Despite being new, all of the phone will only come with Android Marshmallow 6.0, which is a disappointment as smartphones like these are never guaranteed with software updates once they are released. Having Android Nougat 7.0 instead, would have made for a more compelling argument. Polaroid does not want the world to expect much of its newest smartphones and have set the expectations very low from the get-go. If the pricing is on the mark, then even these specifications might probably be forgiven.

With this, Polaroid has taken a brave step forward by making itself known in the smartphone business Hopefully, the company’s success becomes as instant as its polaroids.
