Nearly one year after launching its wildly-popular Reactions feature, Facebook on Monday morning announced that it has begun trials of the highly-requested “dislike” button, which the company has already started rolling out to “a small number of users” exclusively within its Messenger App, according to a report published by the U.K. Independent.

The dislike button, which has for long been on the shortlist of most wanted features among Facebook’s roughly 1.9 billion active users, will be limited to the company’s Messenger app, for the time being. As part of its efforts to overhaul the advanced communications platform, Facebook is hoping that users will employ the emoji-based reaction in response to individual messages, similar to how they can “like”, “love”, or express a number of other emotions to individual posts on their newsfeed.

Facebook has been adamant, however, that the option to dislike a certain message will be more of a way for a user to say “no”, such as in group conversations, when members are asked for their ‘yay’ or ‘nay’ opinions. While millions of users have been hounding Facebook to release a dislike button for years now, the company has nevertheless pushed back on the idea, citing its sentiments that the feature could too easily be employed as a form of bullying, or that it could ultimately bode unfavorably with popular brands, who some users may not approve of.

“We’re always testing ways to make Messenger more fun and engaging,” a Facebook spokesperson told TechCrunch. “This is a small test where we enable people to share an emoji that best represents their feelings on a message.” 

According to an article published last month by New York Magazine, more than 300 billion reactions have been issued via Facebook users since the feature’s launch last spring — with “love,” in particular, being the most popular among them.

While the feature is certainly a welcomed addition to the Messenger app, we would obviously hope that dislike ultimately becomes an option in the main Facebook app. If you haven’t yet downloaded Facebook’s Messenger app on your iPhone or iPad, you can download it for free here.
