Google has developed a new way to connect Bluetooth headphones called FastPair. The new pairing method will save you going into settings to pair your headphones.

When a supported device is nearby, you’ll get a notification on your phone. Tap the notification and pairing is complete. No need to go through the Settings. Furthermore, if the accessory you just connected has its own app in the Play Store, a new notification will tell you about that. You can jump right to its listing with one tap.

The feature is coming with an update to the Google Play Services. It will work on all devices running Play Services 7.11 on Android 6.0 and beyond. This means a lot of devices out the in the wild already support this new feature. If only Play Services could modify more of the Android core…

Undoubtedly, this new feature was inspired by Apple’s successes with the W1 chip. Apple lets you seamlessly connect all your devices to Beats headphones, even pausing your music for you. Google’s only challenge: They don’t control the Bluetooth headphones.

Unfortunately, the feature will only work with supported accessories. For now, the only products supporting the feature are Google’s Pixel Buds and Libratone’s Q Adapt On-Ear headphones. The Plantronics Voyager 8200 series headsets will be supported “soon”. If you own any other Bluetooth accessory you’re out of luck.
