Apple Watch Series 5? Or Updated Series 4?

Apple is likely getting ready to unveil its new devices within the next few weeks, at its annual September event typically held in the Steve Jobs Theatre. Rumours suggest that this show will likely reveal the next generation of iPhone and Apple Watch. Adding fuel to this rumour is the fact that several new devices recently were uncovered after being filed with the Eurasian Economic Commission.

There are several rumours surrounding the iPhone, such as a rebrand of the iPhone XR to be the base iPhone, and the follow-up to the XS and XS Max will get the label of Pro, in two sizes. However, the part of these filings that has caught my interest the most is actually surrounding the Apple Watch.

I’ve been holding on to my Apple Watch Series 2, with expectations of upgrading this year to the presumed Series 5. The uncovered filings indicate that there are likely to be four Apple Watch models released, labeled as A2156, A2157, A2092, and A2093. These four models will in all likelihood be separated between the two sizes of Watch, that is, 40 mm and 44 mm. So that means it looks like two versions of each size of watch, to give the four models. However, other recent discoveries in the watchOS 6 betas have suggested that Apple is planning on releasing watches with either titanium or ceramic cases. Both of these materials are very exciting, though it does seem to indicate one important thing: there is no new model with the standard, basic aluminum backing. Both titanium and ceramic would seem to be more expensive options, and so what many sites seem to be ignoring is that there does not seem to be an aluminum model this year. And if there is no cheap aluminum version, that suggests that Apple Watch this year is only getting a cosmetic refresh. If the internals were getting a significant upgrade to warrant being called a Series 5, Apple would definitely create a lower cost version instead of just two premium material versions.

So, while I’ve been waiting for a Series 5 watch this year, what hopefully will happen instead is a price drop on the current Apple Watch Series 4 alongside an introduction of Series 4 with pricier premium case materials.
