Apple Drops Samsung for A10 & A11 Chips for iPhone 7, 8 Respectively

Samsung had been one of the major Chip manufacturers for iPhones for quite some time. However, going by the winds, Apple is reportedly dropping the South Korean tech giant for not only A10 in Iphone 7 but also A11 chips in iPhone 8.

As per sources, TSMS has become the sole manufacturer of Apple’s A10 chip which will come with the iPhone 7 which is set to release this fall. What’s even more surprising is that the Cupertino-based company has dropped Samsung even for A11, which will come with the 2017 model of iPhone.

“TSMC is already the exclusive manufacturer of Apple’s A10 chip which will power the upcoming iPhone series slated for launch in September 2016. The Taiwan-based foundry will continue to be the sole supplier of Apple’s next-generation A11 processor that will be built on a 10nm FinFET process, the report indicated, without citing its sources,”DigiTimes.

TSMC is expected to start the small-volume production for the A11 chips from the second quarter of 2017. If the reports are accurate, it could be a huge setback for Samsung.

“Our first 10nm customer product has been produced with satisfactory functional yield. So far, three consumer products have been taped out to us.” TSMC co-CEO Mark Liu had recently said at the company’s investors meeting.

Apple and Samsung are the two biggest smartphone manufacturers in the world. As per reports, Samsung Galaxy S7 has outsold the iPhone 6s in the US (16% vs. 14%).

Though several Android bloggers are going hammer-on-tongs asserting that S7 is better than the 6s, very few, try to take home the point that iPhone 6s had been released last year. Even in terms of total sales, iPhone 6s is still way ahead of its rival.
