It’s frustrating when your Iphone keeps buzzing, especially when the conversation isn’t important or timely. By disabling notifications for that conversation, you can get rid of the annoying notifications or banners of incoming messages. In this post, I’ll demonstrate how to hide alerts in the Messages app on your iPhone.

How to hide message alerts from specific chats using iMessage

  1. Launch the Messages app on your iPhone → Open a conversation.
  2. Tap on the Profile icon.
  3. Toggle on Hide Alerts → Choose Done.

Additionally, you can also go to Messages → Slide the message from left to right → Tap on the bell icon.

Turn off notifications for mentions

Further, you can choose not to receive alerts when someone mentions you in any chat.

  1. Go to Settings → Messages.
  2. Under Mentions, toggle off Notify Me.

How to hide message notifications from unknown contacts

In case you don’t want to receive texts from someone whose contact is already saved on your device and you don’t want to block that contact on your iPhone. You can follow the steps outlined below to delete the connection and send the SMS from the user in the Unknown Senders section in the Messages app.

Note: You can still read and reply to text messages from unknown senders, but you won’t get notifications for them.

  1. Launch the Contacts app.
  2. Tap the Search box on top of the screen.
  3. Search and tap the [Contact Name] → Select Edit.

  4. Scroll down and select Delete Contact → Confirm by tapping Delete Contact.

  5. Now, exit the Contacts app → Go to the Settings app.
  6. Head to Messages → Tap Unknown & Spam under Message Filtering.
  7. Toggle on Filter Unknown Senders → Choose SMS Filter.

Customize iPhone’s notification stack for the Messages app

Further, you can customize your notification stack to control how you receive your Messages app notifications.

  1. Navigate to Settings.
  2. Launch Notifications → Head to Messages.
  3. Tap the radio button beneath Lock Screen to disable it.

Additionally, you can also choose Notification Center, Banners, or all three of them. Here’s what each setting does:

  • Lock Screen: This setting prevents alerts from displaying on your Lock Screen.
  • Notification Center: Removes alerts from your Notification Center.
  • Banners: Prevents alerts from showing as banners on your iPhone.

Disable iMessage preview

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Go to Notifications → Select Messages.

  3. Tap Show Preview → Select Never.

Note: If you only want to see message previews when you’re using your device, then choose When Unlocked. It is also the default option.
