Apple Watch ECG Feature Saves 48-Year-Old Man Life

A very Low Resting Heart rate can be a sign of potentially dangerous cardiac abnormalities. Earlier this week, Telegraph reported that Paul Hutton, a 48-year-old UK man received life-saving advice from Apple Watch’s ECG function. Apple Watch sent cautionary notifications to Hutton after it detected multiple incidences of a very low resting heart rate.

This prompted Hutton to contact his doctor regarding the notifications, and it was confirmed that his heartbeat was indeed abnormal.

His doctor initially suggested dietary planning including reducing caffeine intake to try and rectify the situation. However, when this didn’t work, it was found that Hutton suffered from ventricular bigeminy.

This is a relatively common abnormality where the heart beats in an irregular rhythm. After consulting his doctor due to the Watch ECG notification, Hutton opted for corrective surgery and is now doing much better. After the surgery, Hutton spoke to The Telegraph and said: “I keep checking my pulse on my Apple Watch, and it all seems good.”

Drowning, Car Accidents, and Heart Attacks: Apple Watch Saved Them All

This isn’t the first time lives have been saved by Apple Watch’s useful functionality. Just a few days ago, a jet ski enthusiast from Chicago narrowly avoided drowning in lake Michigan. Thanks to Apple Watche’s emergency call feature, word got out.

And two weeks before that, and an 80-year-old woman in Kennebunkport, Maine was saved after an accident. Her Watch’s fall detection feature triggered, and it sent an emergency message to close family.

Wearables have the potential to completely revolutionize the way in which chronic diseases are diagnosed. Ordinarily, chronic abnormalities can only be diagnosed during infrequent medical checkups where the doctor may miss out a diagnosis until later.

With wearables, early detection becomes much more feasible than before since warning signs can be detected as and when they develop.
