Is your Bluetooth device like Wireless Keyboard, Trackpad, or Magic Mouse randomly disconnecting from Mac and often goes off the radar? Don't worry. It's something most of us have encountered at some point or the other.
There could be more than one reasons why the Bluetooth Devices would repeatedly disconnect from your Mac. As for instance, it could be the rather poor Signal Strength, sloppy batteries or some minor technical hiccups which might be spoiling your party. Try out these quick solutions to fix this annoying issue right away!
Note: Before trying out these solutions, make sure to keep wired mouse and keyboard with you-just to sail through all the viable tricks a bit easily; especially if you are using iMac and Mac Mini.
How to Fix Randomly Disconnecting Mouse, Trackpad, and Keyboard on Mac
Solution #1: Make Sure the Bluetooth Devices Are Charged Up
Many a time, I have found my Bluetooth devices repeatedly disconnecting from Mac whenever they are low on power. They don't seem to function properly when they are not sufficiently charged. Once the Bluetooth devices are charged up, their function returns to normal. Hence, make sure the device has the required power to continue to function properly.
To check the battery level, click on the Bluetooth menu, select your device. Now, you will see the remaining battery level of the device.
Solution #2: Turn Off/On the Bluetooth Devices
On some occasions, I am able to fix this problem just by turning off/on the devices. Hence, power off your wireless device, leave it for some time and then turn it on. Just press and hold the power button until the green light turns off. Then, press on the power button again to turn it on.
Solution #3. Turn Off/On Bluetooth, Disconnect the Device and Connect It Again
Click on the Bluetooth menu and select your device and click on Disconnect. You will also see an option to Turn Bluetooth Off in the menu, click on it to turn it off.
Then, click on the Apple menu and select Restart.
Once the computer has restarted, turn on Bluetooth and connect the device again.
Solution #4: Delete the Device Profile and Re-Add It
If the device is still not functioning up to the mark, start from the scratch. Delete its profile and re-add it. Simply click on the Bluetooth menu and select Open Bluetooth Preferences.
Alternately, you can click on Apple Menu → System Preferences → Bluetooth).
Now, click on the “X” next to the device you want to delete and confirm it by clicking on Remove in the popup.
Now, add the device again.
Solution #5: Check out the Signal Strength/Change the Battery
Check out the signal strength of your device. To do so, click on the Bluetooth button+Option Key on your Keyboard and select your device. Check out RSSI to view the signal strength. The lower the number, the better the signal. As for instance, -20 is considered to be a very strong signal. Anything above 50 is not considered to be up to the mark.
You need to change the battery of the device if the signal strength is not good. It (the weak signal strength) causes the device to function rather slowly.
Solution #6: Add Some Additional Thickness
There are a couple of useful tricks you can try to fix this repeated disconnection issue of the Magic Mouse.
- Remove the batteries from your Bluetooth device, cut a tiny aluminum foil (approximately ½-inch square in size) and then wrap it around the negative terminal of the battery. Then, install the battery in the device.
- The other trick is to remove the battery cover of the mouse, then cut a tiny piece of paper into the rectangle (approximately 1 inch by ½-inches) and then put it on top of the batteries. Then, re-insert the battery cover.
- The benefit of adding this extra thickness is that it provides a bit of force between the battery and the spring-loaded contact, which may result in better connection and signal strength.
Solution #7: Update Your Mac
Many a time, you can fix a number of issues just by updating your computer. Check out if there is any update available for your Mac (Go to App Store → Updates). If it's there, make sure to update it to the latest version.
