Canon M50

The fact that 2 of our editors purchased Canon M50s this year is a testament that it highly impressed us. Armed with Digic 8 image processor and 24.1MP CMOS sensor, Canon M50 has everything we need to produce our contents.

OSMO Pocket

This was an insta-buy for me. Announced in November 2018, Osmo Pocket is a product engineered with all the good things that DJI has made over the years. The 3-axis gimbal works like magic and the ability to shoot 4k at 60fps make it one of the  best portable cameras that anyone can bring.

At CES 2019, I’m going to use the Osmo Pocket for establishing shots and b-rolls at the event to virtually put you into the scene.

Saramonic SR-WM4C

I don’t want dangling microphone cables when covering events. For that reason, I thought of investing on a budget wireless microphone that I can use on my Canon M50. The SR -WM4C is perfect for what I need, and it didn’t cost me an arm and a leg to buy one (less than PhP7,000).

Should I need to use a wired microphone for interviews, then this is where my Saramonic SmartRig+ will come in very handy. This will allow me to use 4 wired microphones simultaneously on a single camera.

Cherry Roam

I’m bringing my Cherry Roam to the US! I currently have PhP1,800 remaining credits, and I can easily top this up using myPayPal account. There are various plans to choose from when using this internet roaming device in the US. With PhP5,500 credits, I can basically use 2x 5GB during the duration of my trip for a total of 10GB data allocation at 4G speeds. If we compare this to T-Mobile Tourist Plan, which I can avail at either in LAX or McCarran airport, it costs $30 for a 2GB Plan at 4G speeds. Once data allocation is depleted, speeds is reverted to 3G speeds (but with uncapped data allocation).

Cherry Roam works mostly like a pocket WiFi, except that this one is powered by a SIM-less solution from GlocalMe, which allows it to connect to any partner network around the world, automatically selecting the one with the strongest signal. It’s also fitted with a 4-inch touch display that allows you keep track of your data usage via the CherryRoam app, and can also accommodate up to 5 devices connected simultaneously.

You may also purchase data packages for your trip through the app. Available payment methods are Credit Card, or via PayPal. Rates start for as low as PhP250 for 1GB, valid for 3 days.

Apple iPhone XS Max

As Apple’s current top of the line model, the iPhone XS Max offers performance, power and longer battery life than its previous iterations. It has all the applications that I will use during my trip, and with my Smart Postpaid SIM connected via roaming, I can freely use unlimited internet at PhP550/day. It’s fairly more expensive than what my Cherry Roam can offer, but it’s definitely good alternative when needed.

Alternatively,  I will be bring the Huawei Mate 20 Pro as it’s SIM unlocked and also offers a better range of features and benefits.

I have been using this more than 2 years now, and I consider it as my constant travel buddy. It features the best noise cancelling features in the market, and with latest companion app that’s compatible with iOS and Android, I can control the level of noise cancelling on the fly.

Nintendo Switch

The Nintendo Switch was our best purchase in 2017. With this device, I can play my favorite game re-releases like Diablo 3 Dark Souls 3 on the go. Who would have thought that I’d be able to go back to Tristram and defeat the forces of evil anywhere I want, or even battle with over 70 fighters with Super Smash Brothers Ultimate.
