#NationalBurgerDay: Best Burgers in London

It’s National Burger Day! And to celebrate one of the most exciting days on the extensive National Day calendar, we thought we’d give you a run-down of some of our favourite juicy, meaty sandwiches in our great nation’s capital. So without further ado, here’s some of the best burger joints you can find in London.

MEATliquor – Dead Hippie

We’ve said it a few times here at Average Joes but we’ve always labelled the Burgers at MEATliquor and its sister sites as the best London has to offer. It’s also one of the best atmospheres you’ll find at any burger joint – the N1 restaurant in Angel, for example, is set in an old Citroen garage and takes its inspiration from George Orwell’s 1984. But really it’s all about the burgers. And if there’s a better one than MEATliquor’s Dead Hippie in the capital, we’re yet to have it. Two beef patties fried in mustard. American-style cheese. Dead Hippie Sauce. Sorted.

Hawksmoor – Hawksmoor Hamburger

If you want something a little more high-end then you might as well go all out at Hawksmoor. The steak specialist certainly know their beans when it comes to cooking a slab or beef, and that’s no different when it comes to their burgers. The burgers themselves are made from well-aged Ginger Pig Longhorn cattle and studded with nuggets of bone marrow, with the house burger coming topped with creamy Ogleshield cheese in a brioche bun.

Cafe Football – Mexican Wave

Possibly one of the most surprising burgers we’ve had was at Stratford’s Cafe Football. The bar/restaurant ran by Gary Neville does a good range of stone-baked pizzas but it the burgers that blew us away. Take it from us, the Mexican Wave – a home smoked patty, red pepper, tomato relish and chilli cheese burger – was one of the best we’ve had this year and justifies its National Technical Burger 2015 award.

Dip & Flip – Dip & Flip Burger

Here at Average Joes, we like burgers and we like roasts. So when we heard that Dip & Flip combine the two, we headed to Battersea as quickly as we could. Dip & Flip’s Burger combines a cheese smothered patty with sliced roast beef or lamb. Served with ketchup, mustard, pickles and slaw, you’ll also get a bowl of beefy gravy to dip it in. Heaven.

Street Kitchen – Foghorn Leghorn

While we’ll usually go for beef, the humble burger doesn’t always have to be about the red meat. And the best chicken burger we’ve had comes courtesy of Street Kitchen. The main event in the Foghorn Leghorn burger is the tender, de-boned and slow-cooked chicken leg which comes with its deliciously crispy skin draped on top. You’ll also get some smoked bacon, apple and mint slaw and Old Winchester cheese thrown in for good measure.

Patty & Bun – Ari Gold Cheeseburger

You could have any burger from Patty & Bun and you’d be satisfied but our award goes to the Ari Gold. You might initially think this is like any other cheeseburger, but there are a couple of key twists which make this sandwich stand out. Firstly, it’s packed with some pickled onions for some extra tang and secondly it features a homemade smoky mayo. Might not sound much, but it’s the little things which set it apart.

Grillstock – Smokestack Burger

Much like with the Flip & Dip, we’re unashamed of our love for doubling up on the meats in our burgers. And we couldn’t have a list of the best burgers in London without sending some love to Walthamstow’s Grillstock and their Smokestack Burger. A custom 5oz beef burger is topped with Grillstock’s slow-cooked pulled pork, melted cheese, house pickles and some secret ‘juke sauce’. The ultimate BBQ burger.

Stokey Bears – Grizzly Bear

The final burger on our list is somewhat of a hidden gem. Located in Stoke Newington, Stokey Bear is a quirky joint with an electric soundtrack which flips between Italo house music and Studio 54 floorfillers. But more important than that, the burgers are outrageously good. And the standout is the Grizzly Bear. An otherwise outstanding cheeseburger is elevated by the addition of Bear’s homemade bacon jam.
