Revived Renault 5 Steals the Spotlight at Geneva Motor Show

The 91st Geneva International Motor Show ended on Sunday, with the organisers claiming the comeback was successful despite a vast swathe of manufacturers remaining absent.

Despite the dearth of brands on display, the show still managed to rack up 10 world premiers, with the revival of the iconic Renault 5 hatchback of the 70s and 80s — which we got a sneak preview of before the show — attracting the most attention. That was joined by a sister brand, Dacia, which showed off the new Duster SUV.

MG presented the new MG3 compact hatchback, complete with a new petrol-hybrid powertrain, while IM, another brand from MG’s Chinese owners, showed off its Tesla 3 rival, the L6. From Taiwan, Foxconn — the makers of the Apple iPhone — displayed its Pininfarina-designed Foxtron Model B electric SUV, which might make it into production after the manufacturer picked up an ex-GM factory in Lordstown, USA.

The Microlino Lite is a modern take on the bubble car of the 1950s and, apparently, is coming to the UK with an electric motor and battery perfect for urban use. The price tag might be a little steep, though.

Finally, a number of companies showed models that are either concepts, retro-modifications, or just crazy enough to never make it to production, including the Kimera Automobili EVO38, Shenzer Royal Palace SZ600, Silence Ecosystem, and Totem Automobili GTA Modificata.

The likes of BYD, Denza, Lucid and Yangwang also took the opportunity to showcase models to European customers for the first time.

As the first major European motor show of the year, Geneva also hosted the Car of the Year award for 2024, with the title going to the Renault Scenic E-Tech Electric.

Two of the seven show days were sold out, with 40,000 tickets each day, helping the show reach 168,000 visitors.

“I am convinced of the relevance and necessity of GIMS,” explained Alexandre de Senarclens, president of the Comité Permanent du Salon International de l’Automobile. “Given the major importance of the automobile in our society, now and in the future, the industry needs a uniting voice and platform to engage with the public and final customers in the real world. In light of the very encouraging attendance recorded for this 91st edition of GIMS, both from visitors and the media, the Geneva International Motor Show can and must hold this role.”
