Edinburgh Gin has launched the latest limited edition offering in its Edinburgh Gin Presents initiative, designed in collaboration with iconic comedian, actor and writer Eddie Izzard.

The initiative, which works in partnership with Edinburgh Festival Fringe, was created to raise funds to support the arts. Every penny of profit from the sale of the exclusive editions will be donated to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe Society to support artists.

Eddie Izzard was a fitting choice for collaboration with Edinburgh Gin, given her reputation for creativity and inclusiveness, along with a rich history of performing at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Together, they have co-crafted a one-off recipe and bottle design that she hopes will raise funds to give others an opportunity to perform at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe — a platform that has elevated the careers of many talented comedians.

The Eddie Izzard gin contains the classic Edinburgh Gin botanicals you’d expect; juniper, coriander seed, angelica, liquorice and orris. At its heart though is Eddie’s mantra — Believe. Edinburgh Gin has blended Bladderwrack seaweed, Elderflower, Lemon myrtle, Inca berries, Echinacea, Verbena and Elderberries to create a unique flavour profile. The first letters of these botanicals form the word “believe”, a term that Eddie has used throughout her life when seeking strength for challenges she has faced.

The bottle and label, with its eye-catching design, are a crafted piece of art that brings the gin to life. The carefully chosen botanicals are depicted surrounding a fabulous sketch of Eddie as she gazes out to the distance with a bracelet celebrating her newly chosen name, Suzy.

“I was very happy to be asked to work on a new distinct recipe and limited-edition bottle of Edinburgh Gin as I am a patron of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe — the largest arts festival in the world — and because the profits from the sales are going to help new generations of acts starting their careers there,” commented Eddie. “The seven letters of BELIEVE each represent a different botanical that has gone into the creation of the new and limited-edition recipe,” she continued, adding “I know anything is possible if you believe.”

The most important question, of course, is what does it taste like? It presents a delicate aroma on the nose, with subtle hints of citrus alongside herbal notes of verbena and bladderwrack seaweed. On the palate, the flavour burst through, with a blast of juniper, more citrus and elderflower coming to the fore, leaving a slightly sweet, floral finish with a pleasant tingle of spicy warmth. For all of the flavour, it’s still a light and fresh flavour which, when mixed with a chilled tonic, makes for a very pleasing glassful.

A limited run of 2,400 bottles will be available for purchase directly for £35 from the Edinburgh Gin website, or if you are in Edinburgh at the Edinburgh Gin shop on Hanover Street and the distillery in Rutland Place in the city centre.
