Continuing our search for some of the most interesting abodes on the planet, we came across this glazed Spiral home centred on a Courtyard in the town of Estoril, Portugal, connecting the living spaces and the garden roof terrace outside.

The ‘Spiral Courtyard Home’ (as we’ve dubbed it) is the work of Lisbon-based architect António Costa Lima, who designed this family home with a spiralling design intended to represent ‘the family’s journey and also responds directly to its position up against the windowless elevation of its neighbour.’

The plot is located in a residential area originally originally developed to accommodate the Portuguese Riviera’s many holiday-makers. As the House is located with streets either side, the majority of the Spiral Courtyard’s opaque surfaces are focused inwards towards the garden courtyard. The ramp’s entirely glazed internal surface means there’s an abundance of natural light throughout the house.

Timber steps next to the entrance to the house lead to a decked platform accommodating a dining and seating area overlooking the central planted garden. Around rest of the perimeter of the courtyard, a paved ramp-way to the front door which opens into the lounge and kitchen.

The slanted ramp continues inside, leading guests around the central void from the lounge towards the bedrooms on the opposite side of the house. As well as the being the only corridor in the house, the ramp also acts as a gallery for the family’s art collection.

Past the master bedroom, the ramp finally leads to the solar panels powering the house and a stunning view of the surrounding valley and seaside.
