Note: Before we dive into this article, I’d like to point out that this only applies to people who have something higher than the minimum 60Hz. This guide is especially for people who have gotten gaming screens that have 75Hz and above, all the way to 240Hz. It shows how to ensure that your gaming monitor is using the very best of its refresh rate.
How to Check Monitor Refresh Rate Windows 10?
To check your refresh rate on Windows 10 go to Settings >> System >> Display >> Advanced Display Settings >> Display Adapter Properties >> Click on Monitor >> your monitor refresh rate would be on the display.
How to Change and Increase Monitor Refresh Rate Windows 10
To change and increase the monitor refresh rate in Windows 10, go to Settings >> System >> Display >> Advanced Display Settings >> Display Adapter Properties >> Click on Monitor >> your present refresh rate will be under Monitor settings, system refresh rate. To change or increase it, toggle the dropdown for a list of supported refresh rates for your monitor >> Click on any of the refresh rates >> Click OK, and your work should be done.
How to Set Monitor To 144Hz Windows 10 — My 144Hz Monitor Is Only Showing 60 Hz
To set the monitor to 144Hz refresh rate in Windows 10, go to Settings >> System >> Display >> Advanced Display Settings >> Display Adapter Properties >> Click on Monitor >> your present refresh rate will be under Monitor settings, system refresh rate. This the recommended solution if you’re one of those who are having the “my 144Hz monitor is only showing 60Hz” issue.
Can’t Change Refresh Rate Windows 10?
An option is to check what the maximum refresh rate for your monitor is. You can either go below or up to the stated refresh rate for your gaming monitor. If that checks out, then check the cables you’re using.
If your monitor has ports for both HDMI and DisplayPort, you might not be able to exceed the default refresh rate if you’re using HDMI. Most monitors only allow you to upgrade the refresh rate using a DisplayPort cable, so that might explain why you can’t get the refresh rate changed on Windows 10.
You should also check the type of DisplayPort you’re using. Ensure that your DisplayPort Cable is a minimum of 1.2 ratings. The quality should also be up to standard as there are many low-quality cables sold as DisplayPort 1.2, and some have reduced Bit Rate. The HDMI cable should also be a HIGH-SPEED HDMI cable. If you’re using the older HDMI cable, you might not be able to change the refresh rate easily.

Try to launch NVIDIA GeForce Experience >> and select Reinstall Drivers >> Select Custom Installation >> Select Clean Install among the options >> Restart the PC when you’re done >> Retry changing the refresh rate, and it should now work.
Does HDMI Support 144Hz?
The older HDMI cable doesn’t support 144Hz, but the latest types of HDMI cables, the High-Speed HDMI cables have been found to support 144Hz for some gaming setups. So does HDMI support 144Hz? Yes, HDMI 1.2 and above should work well with a 144Hz refresh rate.
