Sony Xperia 1 cameras are disappointing according to DxOMark

Took a while until the team from DxOMark decided to take Sony Xperia 1 into their exhaustive camera tests. Against everything that was expected, the flagship ended up with a poor score.

Sony Xperia 1 was released as a true flagship smartphone with high end specifications. But, even with the famous Sony sensors, didn’t manage to conquer a score as high as it would be expected.

Sony Xperia 1 is “just” as good as Xiaomi Pocophone F1

A lot of people would think that Sony Xperia 1 would be able to reach a mark close to 100 points at least, but that was far from happening. In fact, they only managed to match the score obtain by Pocophone F1 (91 points) and stayed behind smartphones like Xiaomi Mi Mix 2s, Xiaomi Mi 8 and Lenovo Z6 Pro.

So, if you’re looking for a smartphone with good camera performance, there are much better alternatives to Sony Xperia 1, which are even cheaper. You might want to look at the Xiaomi Mi 9 ($336/Rs. 24170), Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 ($653/Rs. 47,000), Lenovo Z6 Pro ($440/Rs. 31,650) or even the popular Redmi K20 Pro ($430/Rs. 30,930).

Underexposed and weak contrast are the biggest problems

According to DxOMark report about their tests, the smartphone presented quite a lot of problems when it comes to exposure and contrast. Mainly, it was found that the HDR feature experienced a lot of difficulties during outdoor tests, capturing a lot of underexposed photos.

Even though DxOMark mentioned some problems with the white balance tracking of the phone, when it comes to portrait photos, managed to get face to face with the Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ and Huawei P30 Pro.

One of the features that avoided an even worse score was its autofocus. According to the report, Sony Xperia 1 was impressive both in speed and accuracy when it comes to autofocus.

If you want to record videos, do not buy the Sony Xperia 1

Yes, you can record video at 240fps. But, DxOMark was very clear when it comes to the end result of the videos captured by the Sony Xperia 1. There are just too many flaws in the video recording experience, like low level of detail, colour irregularities and an annoying constant autofocus.

The only thing that saved (kind of…) the score was the above average stabilization and an impressive white balance.

It’s hard to justify the investment in this smartphone

At this point, it is almost impossible to justify any investment once again in this Sony smartphone. Unless you are a massive Sony fan and don’t really care for photography with the device, there are far too many other offers that give much more value for your money.
