How to Share Steam Games with Family and Friends

When it comes to PC gaming, the best place to get all of your games digitally is via Steam Marketplace. The Steam marketplace has a ton of games, whether free or paid ones. You can also buy select software titles from Steam. There are special sales that take place as well as free weekends for you to play select titles. While Steam has all of this good stuff, did you know that you can easily share your games with your friends or family members?

Yes, you can easily share your games with your friends and also play their games thanks to the Steam Family share feature. Steam has improved this feature and now is a more sensible feature to use. If you want to know how you can do that, you have come to the right place.

Share Steam Games with Family and Friends

Earlier, Steam’s Family Sharing feature wasn’t something that made any sense. When you shared games with your family or friends back then, only one person would be able to play a game from the shared library. If someone else tried to play a game from the shared library on another computer, it would close the first person’s game right away.

Thankfully, Steam has decided to make improvements to Family Sharing and you can now take full advantage of the upgraded Family Sharing feature.

Join The Steam Family Sharing Beta

While Steam did revamp the Family Sharing feature, you cannot get access to it simply with the default stable Steam Client. You need to have the Steam Families beta client to get access. Here is how you can join the beta.

Step 1: First off, launch the Steam client. Let it install any updates if available.

Step 2: Now, click on the Steam tab present in the top left corner.

Step 3: From there, click on Settings.

Step 4: With the Settings menu open, click on Interface.

Step 5: You will see Client Beta Participation. Click on the drop-down menu next to it.

Step 6: Now, choose Steam Families Beta.

Step 7: Steam will now ask to restart the launcher.

Step 8: When it retreats, the Families Client beta will be installed.

Now that you have joined the Families Beta for the Steam Client, it’s time to create a Steam Family group and share those game libraries with your friends.

Create A Steam Family By Adding Your Friends or Family Members

Now that you have the Steam Families Beta client installed on your PC, it is time to create the Family group. The Family group lets you share game libraries between you and the accounts that you choose to add to your Steam Family.

Step 1: With the Steam client launched, click on the Steam tab in the top left corner.

Step 2: Now, choose Settings to open the Settings menu.

Step 3: Click on the family tab. And then choose Family Management.

Step 4: No, click on Create a Family. You need to give the family group a name and then add the members to your family from your friend list.

Step 5: You can select to set the added member as an adult or a child.

Step 6: Once your friends have accepted the request, they will now be part of your Steam family, and you can view the games that they have.

Playing Shared Library Games

Once your friends have been added to your Steam Family group, it’s time to play the games from their library. Here is how you can do that.

Step 1: Launch the Steam client and click on the Library tab.

Step 2: On the left-hand side of the screen, you will see all the games that you have from your library.

Step 3: If you scroll a bit down, you will see the Team Family section.

Step 4: Here are all the games that you can access that belong to your friends or other members who are part of your Steam Family.

Important Points To Note

  • You can play games from the shared library only if the game developer has enabled family sharing for their games.
  • You can install and play any game from your friend’s library.
  • You and your friend can launch and play the same game together without having to worry about sync issues or issues with the game closing on you.
  • A total of 10 devices can be authorized for Family Sharing.

Closing Thoughts

This concludes the guide on how you can share your Steam game with friends and family members via the Steam Family Sharing feature. Now you can enjoy and play these games together.
