Apple kicks off watchOS 9.6 release candidate for developers

After two months of testing, Apple today seeds the release candidate build of watchOS 9.6 to developers. Along with the watchOS 9.6, the company releases a new build to iOS, iPadOS, tvOS, and macOS. If you are already testing out the watchOS 9.6 on your Apple Watch, then you can now install the more stable release candidate build on your watch.

Apple pushes the new firmware to the watch with the 20U73 version number. If you are already on beta, then you can quickly install the incremental upgrade, however, if you are on the stable watchOS 9.5, then the update should require more data for downloading.

For unawares, Apple tests the upcoming upgrade by pushing release candidates to the developers. This is the final build, indeed, the same will be released to the public most probably by the next week.

Usually, Apple mentions the upcoming changes in the release candidate build’s changelog, but this isn’t the case with the newest incremental upgrade. But we can expect system-wide improvements.

If your iPhone is running on iOS 16.6 release candidate then you can upgrade your Apple Watch to the watchOS 9.6 release candidate. If your Apple Watch is already running on watchOS 9.6 beta, then you will receive the release candidate build over the air. Here’s how you can update your watch to the release candidate.

  1. At first, open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap on My Watch.
  3. Then click on General > Software Update > Download and Install.
  4. Enter the password for confirmation.
  5. Tap on Agree to the terms and conditions.
  6. Once done, tap on install.

Prerequisites:

  • Charge your Apple Watch to at least 50% and connected to the charger.
  • Connect your iPhone to a Wi-Fi for internet connection.
  • Make sure that your iPhone is running on iOS 16.

Once you tap the install button, it will download and install the newest update on your Apple Watch. Once the installation process is completed, the watch will automatically reboot to the latest watchOS 9.6 release candidate.
