Make Your MacBook Pro Battery Last Longer With Simple Tips

Battery life, Battery run-time, and perhaps, more importantly, battery performance, are a major concern of most mobile Mac users. Especially for those who travel a lot, a long battery life and top notch battery health are vital. You can extend battery run-time using a host of battery conservation methods, from the obvious to the silly. These tips will help you squeeze the most juice out of the battery on your MacBook Pro or MacBook Air.

1. Adjust Brightness

The single biggest offender of battery drainage is your display. Turn that screen up to full brightness and you get to experience the beauty that is a Mac retina display. However, you leave that brightness to 100% and you’ll witness that battery drain faster than an in-flight toilet.

2. Clean up Junk Files to Improve Battery on MacBook

You know there are kinds of junk/cache files on your MacBook, including safari browsing history and cookies, downloaded app images, system cache files etc. All of these files aim to make your MacBook faster. However, in fact, they are eating up the storage of your disk, and slowing down your Mac speed. And no doubt that these junk files would make your MacBook drain fast if the laptop is working without power connected. So it is essential to clean your MacBook by removing these junks or some unwanted files to extend battery life on your MacBook Pro/Air.

3. Tweak Energy Saver Preference

Don’t be afraid to manipulate the settings in the Energy Saver system preference. You can set the amount of time your laptop will use to put the computer to sleep and the display to sleep separately. Apple’s pretty conservative with its default settings, but you can tighten up the computer sleep setting even further.

4. Turn on battery percentage

Before we start improving your battery performance, it would help if you could see your battery charge level to get a better idea of your Mac battery performance. Having the percentage visible on your menu bar will also make it easier to diagnose when your battery starts behaving badly.

5. Check battery condition

The next thing you will want to do is check the condition of your battery. To do this, hold the option key on the keyboard and click on the battery icon at the top of the menu bar. A “Normal” battery rating is what you will hopefully see and not a “Replace soon” warning. You have three options to fix the latter: buying a new computer, contacting Apple about fixing your existing one, or replacing the battery at your own risk.

6. Update to the Latest Mac OS X

Normally, one new Mac operation system would bring some news to fix the old Mac OS (X) problems. So upgrading to a new Mac OS could be a way to fix some battery problems and extend battery life on your MacBook Pro/Air.

Check and update to new operation system on MacBook:

  • Click on the Apple logo in the menu bar > Pick up “Software Update” option.
  • Click on the “App Store” > Tap on the “Updates” tab.

7. Turn off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth to Save Energy on MacBook

People tend to connect MacBook to Wi-Fi network all the time, and don’t have the habit of turning it off when we are not connected to a Wi-Fi network. This consumes a lot of power to support its function, because it will hunt around for Wi-Fi networks it could join. Therefore, when you are not using Wi-Fi network, closing it is also a great idea to improve battery life on MacBook Pro and MacBook Air.

8. Turn off notifications

For some, notifications are a must; to others they are an afterthought. To your MacBook, they are a battery drain. If you don’t depend upon notifications, you can turn them off and save a bit of battery. To do this, go to System Preferences then Notifications and then manage those notifications in a way to best save your battery. One way to do this is enable Do Not Disturb on a schedule. The easiest method is it to enable/disable Do Not Disturb manually. This is done from within the Notification Shade.

Simple battery savings

The above tips are all fairly simple to put in play. Although they might not all be the most efficient means of working with your MacBook, combined together, they will go a long way to saving battery life. Give them a try and witness your battery life instantly improves.
