Xiaomi sets up an independent Camera unit

Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun has issued an internal e-mail, announcing the establishment of a separate Camera department within the mobile phone division. Zhu Dan will serve as the general manager of the newly formed camera department.

On March 27, 2018, Xiaomi released Mix 2s and the biggest improvement was the camera. The DxO score of 97 made it even more expensive than iPhone X while Galaxy S9+ ranked first among all other smartphones. So considering the camera and hardware performance, Xiaomi Mi Mix 2s is one of the best smartphones that Xiaomi has ever made.

The interesting news is that Xiaomi Mi Mix 2s got its ranking for half a day only. Huawei P20 Pro that turned out to rely on the “three cameras” and “super night view” swept the DxO list and scored the highest score of 109. Huawei P20 Pro has almost created one generation gap in the quality and performance of the camera in mobile phones.

The most embarrassing thing for Xiaomi is that Mix 2s that was released several hours earlier than Huawei P20 Pro. Xiaomi’s biggest achievement didn’t last for long and was taken away by its competitor Huawei.

The internal letter stated that Xiaomi will set up an Independent Camera unit within the mobile phone division to focus on the company’s superior resources and has the duty of taking the camera of Xiaomi’s mobile phones to the top. However, this announcement is a blunder if we think that a large mobile vendor like Xiaomi didn’t have dedicated camera department before. In fact, a mobile phone manufacturer must have a dedicated team responsible for making good cameras. Hardware and algorithms are closely linked. There is no large-scale professional team that can’t really handle it. I have to say that this email is still not careful, and it is easy to be targeted.

Next generations of iPhones to be more expensive

Huawei has taken the camera competition to an unprecedented height, it is no longer just “good”. Xiaomi wants to stand strong in the high-end market. For this, Xiaomi has to be the best in camera segment as well. So, it has decided to set up an independent camera unit. For now, the release date of Xiaomi Mi 7 is nearing. This might indicate that we may not be able to see a substantial improvement in camera in Xiaomi Mi 7. As an MIUI lover, you will not just focus on camera after all Xiaomi brings more features and performance at a cheaper price.
