iOS 17.2 Beta Unveils Spatial Video Recording for iPhone 15 Pro

This feature is particularly tailored for compatibility with the upcoming Apple Vision Pro Headset, marking a significant enhancement in Apple’s video technology.

Users can activate Spatial Video recording by navigating to the Camera settings within the iOS 17.2 Beta 2. By selecting “Formats” and enabling the “Spatial Video for Apple Vision Pro” toggle, iPhone 15 Pro users can unlock this new capability. Apple recommends using the iPhone in a stable, landscape orientation for optimal Spatial Video recording, which operates at 30 frames per second in 1080p resolution. Notably, one minute of Spatial Video content consumes approximately 130MB of storage space.

While these Spatial Videos can be viewed directly on the iPhone 15 Pro, they will appear as standard videos without the 3D effect. However, they are distinctly marked with a “Spatial” label, indicating their compatibility with 3D viewing on the Vision Pro headset.

When viewed through the Vision Pro, these videos do not occupy the full screen by default. Users have the option to expand the video, although Apple cautions that doing so might result in discomfort due to “excess motion”.

This feature is a step forward in Apple’s exploration of immersive video experiences, aligning with the company’s broader push into advanced augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) technologies.
