Apple has increased the price of its Apple Music subscription service for students in an unusual move, going against Spotify’s pricing.

The company has increased the price of its Apple Music Student Plan in key markets such as the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom for the first time, which could give consumers a reason to make the switch to a rival streaming platform.

The standard Apple Music‌ Student Plan has gone from $4.99 in the United States and Canada to $5.99, and in the United Kingdom, it’s climbed from £4.99 to £5.99. It’s still cheaper than the $9.99 and £9.99 per month charged on the standard plan, but it’s an increase nonetheless at a time when consumers are cutting back.

Last month, Apple increased the price of the student plan in a number of countries, such as India, New Zealand, and Australia, warning customers in advance of a price increase. It appears as though Apple isn’t planning to do the same in the UK, US, and Canada, which is an interesting move and could frustrate users.
