Several sources have reported that Apple TV+ has bought the fights to Tom Hanks’ new sci-fi drama BIOS, which is now set for a streaming release on the service sometime during 2021, probably sometime around the end of the calendar year. The official synopsis for the movie is as follows:

“The film follows Finch, the last man on Earth. An ailing inventor facing his own mortality, Finch builds a robot to keep his beloved dog safe. As the trio embarks upon an epic cross-country journey, the scientist must teach his creation to become ‘human’ enough to take care of its charge, and the beloved pet to accept a new master.”

BIOS was announced as early as 2017, when it was supposed to be released by Universal in theaters across the world. Amblin Pictures produced the movie, with Tom Hanks starring as the protagonist Finch. He is joined by Caleb Landy Jones, Samira Wiley, Laura Harrier and Skeet Ulrich. The film was directed by Miguel Sapochnik from a screenplay by Craig Luck and Ivor Powell.

The movie was initially scheduled for a theatrical release, but Universal sold the rights to Apple TV+, mostly because the theatrical market was hit heavily by the COVID-19 pandemic and although theaters have begun to recover, the studio projected that BIOS would do better on a streaming service, which led to the movie being sold to Apple. Upon the completion of the deal, Apple swiftly renamed the movie, giving it the new title – Finch – under which it is set to release sometime during 2021.

Tom Hanks is a household name and we have no doubt that this will be yet another great movie with the double Oscar-winner in the main role. Apple TV+ has certainly done much to increase its slate of great movie titles and Finch does seem like a movie we’ll gladly watch when it comes out.
