New iPhones to support Apple Pencil

The second generation of iPhone X and an anticipated 6.5 inch model rumoured to be called the iPhone X Plus will both work with the Apple Pencil.

According to Taiwanese publication the Economic Daily News (caution – it’s in Taiwanese) quoted Apple insiders that said that the Apple Pencil will only work on the OLED display models which would rule out compatibility with the upcoming 6.1 inch iPhone with an LCD display.

Pencil it in

The Apple Pencil debuted in November 2015 alongside the original 12.9 inch iPad Pro and works with every other iPad Pro model that has been publicly released since. In March, Apple confirmed that the Apple Pencil would work with the new sixth generation iPad targeted more at classrooms and the education sector.

If this happens then this would be the first time that Apple released a stylus device for the iPhone. Steve Jobs himself famously said in 2007 that “nobody wants a stylus” with a smartphone but the Apple Pencil isn’t a stylus, oh no. It’s a drawing tool, at least according to Apple so there we are.

It’s fair to speculate if Apple plans to release a smaller Pencil for the iPhone as the current one could be too big for some users. It has not had an update since it’s launch in 2015.

Fingers ready

The Stylus is a controversial device with its fans and haters alike. It can be used to handwrite notes, annotate documents, draw on the screen and several other functions that your fingers can also perform.

The Apple Pencil is just one of a possible range of peripheral accessories for the iPhone when the new generation, including the highly anticipated OLED display models, are unveiled in September.
