The much-awaited Oneplus Open is now official in the global market and is the company’s first foldable Phone. Now, it is worth mentioning that this is the same phone that launched in China as the Oppo Find N3. The only different thing is the branding and the software since the phone runs on Oxygen OS instead of Color OS, and even that is not a big difference now.
The phone is priced at $1,699, which makes it a bit cheaper than the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 and the Google Pixel Fold.
OnePlus Open weighs 239 grams, making it lighter than regular smartphones, such as the iPhone 14 Pro Max. The reason for this low weight is the upgraded hinge. The hinge uses Titanium Alloy, carbon fiber, and more such lightweight materials. The phone has the TÜV Rheinland “Reliable Folding” Certification for up to 1,00,000 folds.
For the cover display, OnePlus used “Ceramic Guard,” which, the company claims, is 20% more impact-resistant than the Gorilla Glass Victus. The folding display has the Ultra-thin Glass (UTG). The phone is IPX4 rated, so while it can handle the splashes of water, it is not water resistant like the Galaxy Z Fold 5. The phone also misses out on wireless charging, which is a surprise considering the price.
The main design highlight is the huge Camera module on the rear featuring three camera sensors. The LED flash, however, sits outside this module. The camera module has the Hasselblad branding.
Regarding camera specs, OnePlus Open is the first smartphone to use Sony’s 1/1.43″ 48MP LYT-T808 sensor with the “2-Layer Transistor Pixel” technology. This new sensor’s main highlight is its low-light performance, as it can capture more light. The sensor is paired with an f/1.7 lens and supports OIS. The second camera takes ultrawide photos and has a 1/2″ 48MP Sony IMX581 sensor with a 114° FOV lens. Finally, the phone has a telephoto camera with a 64MP OmniVision OV64B Sensor offering 3x Optical Zoom, thanks to the periscope lens. The telephoto camera has an OIS and an f/2.6 lens.
The rear cameras can shoot 4K videos at up to 60fps, but there is no 8K video recording support, something the Z Fold 5 has.
For selfies, there is a 32MP sensor on the cover display and a 20MP sensor on the foldable display. Both cameras can shoot 4K videos at up to 30fps.
Coming to the displays, the OnePlus Open has a 6.31-inch Super Fluid LTPO 3.0 AMOLED cover display with a 10-120Hz refresh rate, 2800 nits peak brightness, and a 2484 x 1116 pixels resolution. The aspect ratio is 20:9.
The foldable panel has a 7.82-inch Flexi-Fluid LTPO 3.0 AMOLED panel with 1-120Hz refresh rate, 2440 x 2268 pixels resolution, 1440Hz PWM dimming, 2800 nits peak brightness and a 1.0758:1 aspect ratio.
OnePlus calls these the “ProXDR” displays, and both panels support Dolby Vision.
There is a 4,805mAh battery with 67W fast wired charging. The SOC is the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, with 16GB LPDDR5X RAM and 512GB UFS 4.0 storage.
The software is OxygenOS 13.2, based on Android 13.
OnePlus Open comes in a single configuration – 16GB + 512GB. The price is $1,699 / ₹1,39,999 / £1599 / €1799.
