The Google Pixel 8 is finally official, and as always, we already knew everything about this phone way before the official announcement.

Compared to the predecessor, the Pixel 8 is more expensive, starting at $699/€799/₹75,999, compared to $599/€549/₹59,999.

So, what extra do you get for this increase in the price? Let’s discuss all of that in this article.

Starting with the design, Google Pixel 8 is almost identical to the Pixel 7. The basic design language remains the same, which includes that camera bar on the rear with a dual camera setup, a matte aluminum frame, a flat display with a hole punch cutout in the middle, IP68 certification, wireless charging, stereo speakers, triple microphones, USB Type-C 3.2 port, and an under-display fingerprint scanner.

There is one notable design upgrade this year. The Pixel 8 is more rounded, unlike the Pixel 7, which had a boxy design. The phone also has slimmer bezels than the Pixel 7.

The materials remain the same – Gorilla Glass Victus on the front & back and an aluminum frame.

The display is smaller this time at 6.2-inch, compared to 6.3-inch on the Pixel 7. It is still a Full-HD+ OLED display with a 20:9 aspect ratio, but this time, Google added up to 120Hz refresh rate in the vanilla model (versus 90Hz) and increased the peak brightness from 1400 nits to 2000 nits. The HDR brightness has increased from 1000 nits to 1400 nits.

The battery is bigger at 4,575mAh (versus 4,355mAh), and the wired charging speed is 27W versus 21W on the Pixel 7.

The show’s star is the new Google Tensor G3 chipset, which brings some significant improvements over the Tensor G2. It has a 9-core CPU with a prime Cortex-X3 core, four Cortex-A715, and four Cortex-A510 cores. There is an upgraded Mali-G715 GPU and an upgraded TPU (Tensor Processing Unit). Google claims the new chip allows the Pixel 8 series to run twice as many machine learning models on-device.

Google Pixel 8 has 8GB RAM and a Titan M2 security chip.

One of the biggest surprises was regarding the software updates. The Pixel 8 runs on Android 14 out of the box and will get Android OS & security updates for the next seven years. This is huge because no smartphone maker promises software support for this long, not even Apple!

Finally, speaking of the cameras, the Google Pixel 8 has a dual camera setup on the rear. The primary camera has a 1/1.31″ 50MP Samsung GN1 sensor with a 1.2 μm pixel size, OIS, and an f/1.68 aperture lens. The ultrawide camera has a 12MP sensor with a 1.25 μm pixel size, f/2.2 aperture lens, and 125.8° field of view. A Single-zone LDAF (laser detect auto-focus) sensor is on the rear for better focusing. The rear camera can shoot 4K videos at up to 60fps.

For selfies, there is a 10.5MP camera with a 1.22 μm pixel size, fixed focus, and f/2.2 aperture lens. The selfie camera can shoot 4K 60fps videos.

And how can we finish the article without talking about the software features? The Google Pixel 8 has an “Audio Magic Eraser” feature, which identifies the background noise in the video and lets you remove it. A feature named “Best Take” enables you to combine faces from different pictures into one photo. “Magic Editor” enables you to do things in a few taps that would otherwise require professional-grade photo editing. The Tensor G3 allows real-time translation and improved call screening.

The price starts at $699 / €799 / ₹75,999.
