Huawei Mate 60 Pro launched with a triple hole punch design

The Huawei Mate 50 Pro was launched in September last year with a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset (without 5G support), a variable aperture lens, a 64MP 3.5x telephoto camera, and more. The phone was launched in China at ¥6799 or around $930. The Huawei Mate 60 Pro is now official in the Chinese market, and the company has completely changed the design compared to the Mate 50 Pro.

Huawei always tries to make its phones stand out; the Mate 60 Pro is no exception. On the back, the Huawei Mate 60 Pro has a circular camera module, a triple camera setup, and an LED flash. All four color options have a two-tone design on the back, with the Black and purple options having a vegan leather finish.

The design is quite interesting because the bottom rear of the phone is made of metal. And so, to make sure wireless charging works without any issues, the wireless charging coil is placed under the non-metallic part on the rear.

Huawei is using its in-house 2nd generation Kunlun Glass for display protection. The Mate 50 Pro had the first generation Kunlin Glass & it was also the first smartphone glass to receive a five-star rating from SGS Switzerland.

Speaking of the display, Huawei went for a unique design on the front, too. While the Huawei Mate 50 Pro had a big iPhone-like notch, the Huawei Mate 60 Pro goes for a hole punch design. But it isn’t the normal hole punch design we see on smartphones today. Huawei went for a triple-hole punch design on this phone. And that’s not it. The display is curved on all four sides and has symmetrical bezels.

The phone is IP68 certified and supports wireless charging. The fingerprint scanner is under the display & the phone has a stereo speaker setup.

One exciting Huawei Mate 60 Pro feature is “Satellite Calls.” This makes it the world’s first smartphone that can do satellite calls. Communication through satellites is not new for Huawei since last year, the Mate 50 series supported sending messages through satellites. But this year, the company went one step further and added satellite calls to its phone.

The display is a 6.82-inch 10-bit LTPO OLED with 2720 × 1260 pixels resolution, 1-120Hz refresh rate, 1440Hz high-frequency PWM dimming, and up to 300Hz touch-sampling rate. The phone has 12GB RAM and 256GB/512GB/1TB storage. There is support for an NM memory card of up to 256GB to expand the storage.

The battery is 5,000mAh, and there is 88W wired + 50W wireless + 20W reverse wireless charging support. The type-C port is a USB 3.1 Gen 1 port.

Coming to cameras, the Huawei Mate 60 Pro has a triple camera setup on the rear. The primary camera has a 50MP sensor with OIS & a variable aperture (f/1.4 – f/4.0). The secondary camera is for ultrawide photos and has a 12MP sensor with an f/2.2 lens. The third camera is a 3.5x telephoto camera with a 48MP sensor and OIS. There is support for 4K video recording.

On the front, the phone has two camera sensors. The primary camera has a 13MP sensor, whereas the secondary camera has a 3D depth sensor.

If you’re wondering why we haven’t talked about the performance yet, then that’s because Huawei hasn’t revealed what chipset the phone uses. But as per some sources, the Mate 60 Pro has a “Kirin 9000s” chip with the Huawei Maleoon 910 GPU. It is also unclear whether the phone supports 5G or not.

Finally, regarding the pricing, the Huawei Mate 60 Pro with 12GB RAM & 512GB storage is priced at ¥6999, which translates to around $960.
