Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 launched with a bigger cover display

Tags: flip cover galaxy

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 launched today and is officially the newest foldable flip phone from the brand. When the Z Flip 4 was launched last year, it had a similar design as the Z Flip 3. But the story is different this year. Not only the Z Flip 5 has a better chip than the Z Flip 4, but it also has an upgraded design. The starting price, however, remains the same as last year, that is, $999.

The hinge is upgraded this year, and Samsung calls it the “Flex Hinge.” The phone can now close flat without any noticeable gaps.

The Galaxy Z Flip 5 gets a significantly larger Cover display than the Z Flip 4. Compared to the 1.9-inch cover display, the Z Flip 5 has a 3.4-inch display. The display has a “folder” like shape, and Samsung calls it the “Flex Window.” Motorola’s Razr 40 Ultra, with its 3.6-inch panel, still takes the crown when it comes to the size of the cover display, but there is one big difference in how the Z Flip 5 uses this large cover display.

The cover display on the Razr 40 Ultra can run almost every app, but that’s not the case with the Z Flip 5’s cover display. All you get are a lot of widgets that can show information, including the weather, music controls, quick settings, stock market updates, and so on. There is also a new pinch gesture to scroll through all these widgets on a single page. There is a quick reply feature, too, if you want to reply to texts from the cover display, and you will get a full QWERTY keyboard in that case.

As for the specifications of this panel, it is a 3.4-inch Super AMOLED display with a 720p resolution and a 60Hz refresh rate. This low resolution and refresh rate makes sense, considering you won’t be using the outer display for running various apps, something you can do on the Razr 40 Ultra.

As for the foldable display, it is the same as last year – a 6.7-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X panel with a Full-HD+ resolution & up to 120Hz refresh rate that can dynamically switch between 1Hz to 120Hz. Speaking of other similarities, the battery size is the same at 3,700mAh, and so is the 25W wired charging speed. The camera setup is the same – 12MP wide (OIS) + 12MP ultrawide + 10MP selfie camera.

The Galaxy Z Flip 5 gets the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy SOC. This is the same chipset that powers the Galaxy S23 series. The base variant has 256GB storage and 8GB RAM.

Finally, there is OneUI 5.1.1 based on Android 13, IPX8 certification, and Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protection for the cover display.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 comes in four colors – Mint, Graphite, Cream, and Lavender. Some colors are exclusive to the Samsung website – Blue, Gray, Green, and Yellow.
