Sharp Aquos R6 goes official with a 1-inch camera sensor

Sharp is a popular electronic products manufacturer in Japan that also makes smartphones, and the latest offering from the company is an exciting one. The Sharp Aquos R6 is the newest flagship from the brand, and keeping all things aside, the main highlight of this Phone is the camera on the back. This phone packs a camera with a 1-inch sensor, the largest ever put in a smartphone! Now it is worth mentioning that it isn’t the first phone to have such a large camera sensor. In fact, Panasonic has done it already with its Lumix CM1 smartphone that launched in 2014. But the thing is, the Aquos R6 from Sharp is a fully-fledged flagship phone with such a large camera sensor, unlike the Lumix CM1, which was more of a “Smart Camera” than a “Smart Phone.”

Since the camera is the main USP of this phone, let’s talk about that first before anything else. Made in collaboration with LEICA, the 20 Megapixel CMOS sensor has a 7P Summicron lens with f/1.9 aperture. The focal length that this lens offers is 19mm. And well, that’s the only camera on the back. There are no ultrawide or telephoto cameras, and all that this phone offers is a massive primary camera sensor and a Time of Flight sensor alongside it.

Design-wise, since it is a flagship phone from Sharp, there are premium design elements such as a curved display upfront with a hole-punch cutout in the middle. The phone also has a dedicated Google Assistant button on the side. Another interesting feature is the in-display fingerprint reader. It is a Qualcomm 3D Sonic Max fingerprint scanner which is Qualcomm’s largest (20x30mm2) and most advanced fingerprint sensor based on ultrasonic technology.

Speaking of the display, the Sharp Aquos R6 has a 6.6-inch Pro IGZO OLED panel which is again something that is first on any smartphone. This panel offers an astonishing peak brightness of 2000 nits and a refresh rate of up to 240Hz, which can vary dynamically between 1Hz-240Hz. The panel features a resolution of 2,730 x 1,260 pixels.

Under the hood, the Aquos R6 has the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 SOC paired with 12GB LPDDR5 RAM and 128GB UFS 3.1 storage that can be expanded via a microSD card of up to 1TB. The phone packs a 5,000mAh battery and supports fast wired charging. The phone is IPX5, and IPX8 rated for protection against dust and water.

Finally, there is a 12MP selfie shooter, and Android 11 runs out of the box.

The Sharp Aquos R6 smartphone comes in two colors only – White and Black. The pricing has not yet been revealed by the company, and as always, we don’t think this phone will make its way out of the Japanese market.
