What Causes Black Screen on Windows 10?

There are several reasons that can be credited to the blank Black screen on Windows 10, and the major one is due to Windows update.

It happens on Windows 8 especially after updating the OS to a higher one such as 8.1 or Windows 10 15063 and now, the same is the case on the Windows 10.

Other than this problem stemming from an update,

It can also be caused by malfunctioning peripherals or add-ons connected to the system and a graphics driver being automatically set to project a different device such as a second monitor or TV.

How to Fix Windows 10 Black Screen With Cursor

SECTION 1:

Before you proceed, you need to know if this is an actual problem that needs to be solved.

For instance,

If the Blank unresponsive screen occurred during Windows update, then it might be because the update is still in progress and there is no cause for alarm.

Large volumes of files to be migrated to the new Windows version may take several hours before the setup is complete.

You can note if the setup is still ongoing if the LED light on your PC is blinking and then wait for a few more hours.

If the reverse is the case, that is, after 7 hours the setup is not still completed, then you can try any of the following options outlined below.

Option 1:

  • Disconnect your PC from the Network connection source such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth adapters.
  • Disconnect all Peripherals such as external storage, printer, game controller, network cables etc. connected to the PC if any.
  • Shut down your PC by holding down the power button and in the case of a Laptop, remove the battery.
  • After some minutes or an hour, reboot your PC.
Now,

Your PC will either boot normally on successful Installation of the new OS or the PC will still be loaded with your current OS version.

SECTION 2:

There are two solutions for Windows black screen problems given here, and which you choose to apply will be determined by your ability or inability to sign in after booting.

Option 1

If you're able to sign into your Windows 10 before being presented with the Black Screen, you will need to stop all RunOnce Processes.

To do this,

  • Simultaneously hold down the Ctrl, Shift, and Esc keys.

These three keys will give you access to the Task Manager.

With access granted,

  • Navigate to 'Processes' and 'Services' Tabs, then look for RunOnce32.exe or RunOnce.exe
  • Cancel or stop any running instances of RunOnce32.exe or RunOnce.exe in both tabs.

Next

  • Click on 'File' menu
  • Select 'Run new task', and
  • At the command prompt, type shutdown -t00 -r and then select 'Ok' to restart your PC.

After doing the steps outlined above, the problem should be resolved.

Option 2

If you're unable to sign into your Windows 10 before being presented with the Black Screen, try this:

All peripherals if any should be disconnected from your computer before you proceed as a faulty one may be the reason your system is not booting fully.

To begin,

  • Simultaneously click on the Windows and C keys to boot the computer in Safe Mode.
  • Next, click on 'Change PC Settings'
  • Click on 'Update and Recovery'
  • Select 'Windows Update'
  • Also, select 'Check for updates'
  • Then 'View details'
  • Finally, click on 'Install updates' via the option menu

Option 3

If you're also unable to sign in, then you can also use a Windows 10 installation media saved on a DVD or USB flash drive to access the features of your computer and repair your Windows PC or Tablet.

Here, you will need to create a bootable disk so as to Access Windows 10 Computer Stuck at Black Screen

To do this,

  • Create a bootable disk by downloading and burning a Windows 10 Installation media to a bootable storage media such as a USB or CD/DVD.
  • Insert the device into your computer, then reboot the system using the Windows Installation media.
  • Choose the option 'Repair This Computer' on inquiry.
On the preceding screen, you will be presented with three options which are:

  • Exit and Continue to Windows 10,
  • Troubleshoot the system and,
  • Shut down.

Select

  • 'Troubleshoot'

  • Select 'Advanced Options'

  • Click on 'Startup Settings'

  • Then select 'Restart' to gain access to system functions

  • After the system has rebooted, use the F5 key to Enable Safe mode with Networking or click on 'Enable Safe Mode with Networking'.

  • Next, Sign into your PC and do any of the following.

1. Disable or reinstall your video driver or,

2. Disable fast startup

To  Disable or reinstall your video driver:

  • Use the Windows + X keys combination to access the Device Manager.
  • Click on the drop-down menu for Display Adapter,
  • Right click on it and select 'Disable' or 'Uninstall'.

If you choose to Disable, you can restart your computer and update to the latest Driver Software.

On the other hand,

Your system will automatically reinstall your current driver on rebooting if you choose to uninstall the driver.

To disable fast startup,

  • Still in Safe Mode, navigate to your PC's Control Panel.
  • Goto 'System and Security'.
  • Select 'Power options'.
  • Select the 'Choose what the power button does'.
  • Select 'Change settings that are currently unavailable'.

  • Untick the CheckBox 'Turn on Fast Startup'.
  • Then click on 'Save changes'.
  • You can go ahead and restart your computer

Following any of the methods above, the Windows 10 black screen issues on your PC, Tablet or Laptop should be resolved whether it is stuck during software installation, before you log in or after.
