How Technology Has Impacted the Clothing Industry

The fashion Industry has been a booming business for centuries. In 2017, this sector made over $300 billion in revenue. A market that is also thriving in modern society is the technology industry. It should be no surprise then that the two have made a significant impact on one another. The following are three ways that technology has become embroiled in the Clothing industry.

High Fashion

High-end fashion is often the first to see the impacts of technology. Luxury brands and tech companies have been teaming up to create innovative pieces. In 2016, Marchesa and IBM collaborated to produce a dress that changed colors, reflecting the feelings of Twitter users talking about the dress during the Met Gala. A technology-driven change in high-end clothing that is less rooted in aesthetics and more focused on functionality is taking place in the athletic sector. In 2018, Ralph Lauren created uniforms with the ability to self-heat through the use of conductive carbon and silver ink that is powered by a battery pack.

Everyday Clothing

High-end brands are not the only ones reaping the benefits of technology in the industry. A technological advance that is accessible to the average consumer is heated clothing. People are incorporating heating elements in clothing for men and women that can be powered by batteries, USB chargers, or wirelessly. Some of these heated garments can even be found for under $50. Another trend involving technology in the everyday fashion industry are wearable LED lights. Flashing lights on clothing are being implemented not only as a fashion statement, but also as a safety precaution for people who are out and about after dark on foot.

Sustainable Fashion

Technological advances in the fashion industry have had a positive effect on the environment as well. Luxury brands are currently experimenting with sustainable clothing materials. Some of the items being utilized in clothing production are recycled fabrics, vegetable cashmere, algae, and the peels and leaves of various fruits, such as pineapples and oranges. In addition to being biodegradable and better for the environment, these natural fabrics are also less toxic and more comfortable than their artificial counterparts.

The fashion industry has blossomed and grown into something the average consumer could have never dreamed of. Within the past decade, many innovations have been introduced to the clothing market with intentions to impact a wide spectrum of industries. One major industry that is growing at least at the same pace is technology. And together, these power-house industries have transformed each other.
