Now police have arrested all those involved in the alleged Wedding after a man visiting a festival at a nearby resort saw them and reported the incident. In a statement shared on Twitter, Mecca Police said: ‘The man said people attending the event were surprised when a few young men entered the place and tried to perform a “gay wedding scene”.’

The statement, which was translated from Arabic, added that one of the men in the ceremony was a ‘crossdresser’.

It continued: ‘After the crossdresser and other people involved in the incident were identified, they were all arrested and their case will now be referred to the prosecution.’ Homosexuality is banned in Saudi Arabia and can result in severe punishment ranging from lashings to death.

Following the video surfacing online, dozens of people reacted in anger. One person wrote on Twitter: ‘In the purest spot on earth… Two homosexuals marry in Saudi Arabia,’ according to Al-Araby. While another blamed foreigners for the ‘phenomenon’ of homosexuality in the country. Yet there were some who praised the country’s new leader, Mohammed bin Salman, for being more liberal.
