How To Extract Text From Scanned PDFs

Simple Way To Extract Text From Scanned PDFs

Since the “paperless” concept emerged many companies and businesses around the world embraced the approach and jumped on the bandwagon. This means they are leaning towards a work environment where paper documents are surplus.

Everything is being Scanned and transformed into digital form. By doing this they are helping preservation of the environment, saving money and storage space and enabling easier file sharing among colleagues.

However, not everything is great about this concept. There are many predicaments surrounding this approach. One of the main problems is that the scanned documents are usually saved in a PDF format.

Essentially these scanned documents are images and any information in them can’t be searched or edited for that matter. This can be a huge setback if someone needs to make some changes or to add new information in it without the hassle of retyping the whole document.

Fortunately, there is a way of overcoming this obstacle. You can make edits to the data from Scanned Pdf with the usage of an OCR (Optical Character Recognition) software that can extract text from Scanned Pdfs.

Today, I will show you how to do exactly that with Able2Extract Professional 11, a PDF tool that is equipped with advanced OCR technology that can unlock textual data from scanned PDFs.

Extract Text From Scanned PDFs Step-by-Step Process

All you need to make those tedious scanned PDF files manageable is to extract the content from them to a format you can work with. In this case, I covered how to convert scanned PDF file to MS Word. Here is how you can do It in 3 easy steps:

Step 1

First thing you need to do is to open the PDF file you wish to extract the text from. After that go down the Edit drop-down menu and in the OCR Options select Perform Image-based Conversion.

Step 2

Next thing you have to do is to choose whether you want to convert the whole scanned document or just a part of it. You can do this by selecting the All or Area option in the toolbar. For this test purposes, I went for an area option.

Step 3

The final step in the extraction process is to pick one of the desired file formats. There are many to choose from depending on your needs. Just click on the icon you want and wait for the conversion process to end. As I already said, I’m converting my scanned PDF to Word.

After the file is converted it will be automatically opened in the program you have previously chosen. For my test, the extraction of the text went pretty well and Able2Extract did a good job as you can see below.

Final Thoughts

Beside the OCR technology, Able2Extract Professional 11 has many other features that are worth checking out. I see it as a good fit for both companies and individuals that deal with scanned PDFs on a regular basis. If you are looking for an all-in-one PDF software Able2Extract might be the thing for you, you can download a free trial and test it out yourself.
