20 Ways to Get More Out of Your iPhone Battery Life

The iPhone can do a great number of useful things – but only if it can hold a charge the whole time you need it. The ways in which we use our phones have a large effect on how the batteries will perform; however, there are a number of simple setting changes you can make in order to extend your iPhone Battery life and keep it working for you all day long.

1. Keep up with software updates.

Many times, the newest Apple software update will include energy saving enhancements that can help you keep your phone running longer (for example, a recent update included the option to switch to “Battery Saver Mode”).

2. Don’t expose your phone to extreme temperatures.

While your phone may still work in an environment that is too hot or too cold, you could be irreversibly damaging your battery’s life without realizing it. If the battery gets too hot (especially if the battery is charged while the phone is too hot), its battery life can significantly decrease.

3. Take it out of the case while it’s charging.

Like your computer, your phone also warms up and generates heat when it’s plugged in. Keeping your phone inside a case while charging it can cause heat to build up inside the phone and therefore damage the battery’s capacity.

4. Keep the iPhone battery half-charged if you are storing it for a while.

If you need to store your phone for a while, be sure to keep it in a temperate location and don’t leave the battery fully charged. A half charge will keep your phone healthy while it’s turned off. A full charge will harm the battery capacity, and no charge at all will send your phone into a “deep discharge” state, which means it will be basically unable to hold a charge.

5. Unplug your phone when it reaches a full charge.

Rather than allowing your phone to linger at 100% while plugged in, it’s best to unplug it and let the battery dwindle as soon as the battery is full. Think of it like “exercising” the battery – getting it to a full charge, letting it completely drain, and then plugging it in to build up to a full charge again is the best way to use it. Plugging your phone in when it’s not quite dead, or leaving it plugged in when it’s fully charged, allow the battery to get “lazy.”

6. Turn down your phone’s brightness.

With the newest iOS, all you have to do is swipe up and slide the brightness down. This is a small change that can have major effect on your battery life. Either keep your screen dim as much as you can, or turn on Auto-Brightness.

7. Use Wi-Fi whenever possible.

Never turn off your Wi-Fi. It uses less power than forcing your phone to search for a cellular 4G or 5G signal.

8. Don’t continuously quit apps.

Many people are sure that double-clicking the home button and then swiping up on any apps they’re not using is a great way to save battery. Actually, when you quit an app, you’re removing it from the device’s short-term RAM. When you open it back up again, it needs to load itself back into the memory, which uses more power than just leaving it alone. If it’s an app you’re going to use again before the day is out, just leave it open.

9. Turn on Low Power Mode.

You can set your phone to automatically prompt Low Power Mode when your battery drops below 20%, but you can actually turn it on anytime. Many of the visual features of the phone won’t work in Low Power Mode, and certain apps won’t sync automatically. But it will stretch your battery life out if you are in a situation where you can’t charge for a while.

10. Check battery settings.

You can look in your settings to see which apps are using the most battery. If they’re not apps you’re using very often, consider deleting them or changing their settings to more power-friendly options.

11. Turn off location settings for any apps you possibly can.

Lots of apps can tap into your phone’s GPS and use your location data, even when you’re not using the app. By turning off location settings, you’ll give your GPS a bit of a rest, which requires much less battery power than always sending your location out to dozens of different apps.

12. Optimize individual app settings.

You can look inside the settings for any individual app, and many apps will have automatically set themselves to refresh or look for updates in the background while you’re not using them. Turning off this feature can save battery life as well as cellular data.

13. Turn on Airplane mode.

If you’re in an area of little-to-no cellular coverage, you can turn on Airplane mode so that your phone isn’t constantly searching for a signal (which kills a battery very quickly). This will still allow you to use things like the camera, the music you have already downloaded, the alarm clock, etc. without completely draining your battery.

14. Turn off Parallax.

The newer iPhones are equipped with Parallax, aka that cool effect you can see when you tilt your lock screen and that makes your icons look like they are floating above your home screen. It’s nice, but it isn’t necessary for the function of the phone, and turning it off can do wonders for your Iphone Battery life.

15. Check in with the Facebook app.

Facebook is notoriously a top contender for the most power-hungry app. Luckily, it allows you to toggle lots of settings that can help with this issue. If you’re not willing to uninstall Facebook (as let’s face it, many of us just aren’t), you can turn off settings like Background App Refresh and the setting that lets videos auto-play. This can restrict Facebook from using quite as much of your battery.

16. Set Auto-Lock sooner.

With the newest iPhone updates, you can toggle how early you want your phone to automatically lock after you set it down. The default setting is 1 minute, but you can set this to as low as 30 seconds, which can help you save iPhone battery in the long run.

17. Disable Bluetooth if you’re not using it.

Bluetooth is another notorious iPhone battery drainer. If you’re not using it currently to connect to a speaker, headphones, or your car’s audio system, turn it off until you need it.

18. Turn your volume down.

It may sound simplistic, but it takes more battery power to play louder audio.

19. Cool it with the vibrations.

If your phone isn’t on silent, chances are it doesn’t need to vibrate. Turning this setting off will save you battery.

20. Turn off iCloud.

iCloud will constantly run in the background and try to sync items in your phone. This is a safety measure, but it can cut down on iPhone battery. So if you’re not particularly worried about backing up your iCal every few minutes, turn those settings off for a battery boost.
