To Get Inspired, Think Like a Child

Have you ever seen a child with a plan – maybe it’s what they want to be when they grow up or an idea for a game they want to play? When a child has an idea, they are persistent, moving full steam ahead to make their dream into a reality, regardless of what it takes. Children are passionate and fearless, but also playful and curious. This powerful combination is exactly what adult Inventors need to source inspiration and make progress with their invention.

Play

When children play, they learn how to interact with the world around them. They learn how to use their imaginations to create new things and interact with people. Play can be incredibly useful for inventors as well. We’re not suggesting you run outside to play tag (although that sounds fun!), but instead, we’re suggesting that sometimes you take a break from sitting at a desk and working to get creative and hands-on. If you’re working on prototyping or design, get out some Play-Doh and make a model. Not everything has to be serious; when learning is fun, you are more likely to take chances and think creatively, like a child would do.

Be Curious

The saying goes “necessity is the mother of invention,” but Curiosity is pretty important too! Children are so curious about the world around them. They are constantly asking questions. When you’re curious about how things work, you’re thinking about problem solving, which will be helpful for brainstorming ideas for your invention. You can practice curiosity by learning about your invention’s industry, the invention industry in general, and the world around you. Subscribe to blogs and social media pages that will keep you up to date on technology and trends. Listen to podcasts that talk about business and marketing. Talk to your friends and family about tech, trends and their view of the world. Ask questions! Most of all, remember to get outside and practice curiosity in nature! You never know where you’ll find inspiration.

Be Fearless

Ever see a child do a jump on a mountain bike, perform at a dance recital, or score the winning point for a spelling bee? Children are fearless. They believe they can be anything they dream and their world is limitless. As adults, we lose that courageous childlike mentality as we become more realistic about the world around us. For inventors, however, it’s important to tap into that forgotten fearlessness to have confidence in yourself and your invention. Take (calculated) risks, explore your dreams, and believe in your ability to accomplish your goals. Being in the right mindset and banishing fear is half the battle.

As an adult, it might be strange to consider taking on childlike characteristics. However, inventors can be motivated by play, curiosity, and fearlessness. Hands-on play encourages you to be more creative. Curiosity causes you to be a problem solver. Fearlessness gives you the courage to pursue your desires. To get inspired, you should think like a child and believe that you can accomplish anything.
