How about some coffee...with salt?

Tags: coffee
Coffee tastes so good. Or, does it? Is it the coffee or the added stuff that makes it such a wonderful treat?

Do you love coffee? I do. At least, I thought I did. I'm getting ready to do a Whole 30 pretty soon, and while you are on that program you cannot drink coffee with cream in it. (Or sugar, or anything). A girl I know who turned me on to the idea of the Whole 30 (she's already doing it) posed the question...do you really even like coffee? Somewhere on the forums for Whole 30, she read that they offer the idea that if you don't like it without all the junk you put in it...do you really like coffee? Or do you just like the junk? I had to really think about that. I love ice cream with coffee poured over it, but I'd eat ice cream plain too. Going the other way around, I love coffee with cream in it, but I don't like it plain. Hmm.

Then again, I do love the aftertaste of that wonderfully smelling dark liquid that calls to me. There's something...comforting about it. As time went on a coworker advised my friend to try salt in her coffee. Um, what? Salt? Wouldn't that taste like...gross? She reported that it did in fact cut the bitterness of of the plain coffee. I never thought I'd ever even think of trying something like that. However, that's why we have brave friends that try things first and tell us what they think. So, I decided to be brave. Plus, I really wanted some coffee. (No, I haven't officially started the program yet, but I've been trying to make little changes to prepare for it. So I haven't had any coffee in a while.) Plus, I'm starting to have a crisis of conscience about dairy, which I'll post about later.

Today, I tried it. I ground up about half a teaspoon of pink Himalayan sea salt and put it in the bottom of my cup before I poured the coffee in. I can say that I don't hate it, and I could see myself getting used to it. I definitely could tell the difference in the bitterness of the flavor, and I got that beautiful coffee aftertaste. (The only think I can think of that I actually like an aftertaste to.)
So, if you are starting to cut dairy for any reason, but still want coffee and can't stand it black..try a little salt. Tell me what you think.
