DIY for Moms: Ideas, Tips and Suggestions

If you are a stay-at-home Mom, DIY is a great thing to get into. It makes fixing things far cheaper and can be a fantastic hobby that can bless your family with homemade décor or furniture that suits your taste to a tee. If you have never tried DIY before, it can be an intimidating thing to master, but you will soon get the hang of it, and practice makes perfect!

Getting Started

If your home doesn’t have essential DIY tools like a power drill, a hand-saw, and nuts, bolts, screws, and nails, you can get supplies for cheap from somewhere like Tradefix Direct – spend a bit of time looking for an online superstore that can give you affordable materials and supplies. It’s also very important for you to read up about safety precautions and make sure you don’t put yourself at risk by not having the right equipment or not wearing goggles when cutting wood etc.

Budgeting – Top Tips

It can be tempting to get the tools that mean you can do any DIY work, but you just need some simple tools and simple materials for the vast majority of DIY jobs. Your materials will be where you spend the most money, so out of all the time you spend preparing for your DIY job, spend a good chunk of that time messaging suppliers. Don’t be afraid to haggle a little and even play them against each other if you have the negotiating skills!

Ideas for Beginner DIY Jobs

  • Roman Shade – a Roman shade or a Roman Blind are very stylish window coverings that can be done on a budget. They are also very easy to make, and you only need to be able to sew. The material is everything for a Roman blind, so pick one that suits your interior. It’ll be far cheaper than buying a pre-made Roman blind, and it is just so easy to make – the perfect start to DIY.

  • Textured Vase – if you have an old vase or jar that you have really fallen in love with, you can turn it into a beautiful textured vase that looks like it is at least half a century old! Simply create an old-looking Plaster Paint and lather it on. Give it a few coats with a chalk paintbrush or a stencil brush, trying to add texture. This plaster paint is super easy to make – just mix latex and Plaster of Paris in a 50/50 split. Once the plaster is dry, you can paint your vase with a color that you love to produce a beautiful vintage-looking DIY vase!

  • Rustic Looking Bench – these aren’t at all difficult to make and are a terrific start to woodworking. You just need a couple 2x4 and 2x6 planks, as well as some wood stain, screws, and some sandpaper (on top of a drill and a saw). What’s more – it looks beautiful, both inside and outside the house, and with the right stain, you can make it look like you found this gem in an antique fair.
