Fun Things to do in Marin and the Bay Area this Week: July 5–11

Take a train ride and visit the animals at Sonoma TrainTown this week.

Keep the kiddos busy! Here's out list of fun things to do with the kids for the week of July 5–11. We've broken it down day-by-day with suggestions for activities, outings, events, and more that you can use to help plan out your week.

Keep in mind that some of these activities require advance registration, so check the organizer's website before you attend. If you have something fun you'd like to share, please let us know and we'll consider it for next week's list!

Monday, July 5

  • Explore Novato's Pioneer Park, with its multiple playgrounds, rolling green lawns, picnic areas, and more.
  • Take a train ride and visit the animals at Sonoma TrainTown, Monday–Sunday, 10 am–4 pm
  • Get the kids in the kitchen to help make some delicious homemade bagels.

Tuesday, July 6

  • Go for a scenic family wetlands hike and play a round of minature golf at McInnis Park (reservations are required).
  • Get on your bikes and ride the pump track at Stafford Lake Bike Park in Novato.
  • Shop for fresh produce at this week's Novato Community Farmer's Market, Tuesday, 4–8 pm.

The Exploratorium in San Francisco is now open!

Wednesday, June 7

  • See the movie The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part for only $1.50 at Century Rowland Plaza or Northgate 15, 9:30 am.
  • Now open! Let your curiosity roam free through hundreds of hands-on exhibits at the Exploratorium, San Francisco.
  • Bring your egg shakers and instruments to jam along at the Bon Air, Greenbrae for interactive musical entertainment with Music with Megan, Wednesday, 11:30 am.
  • Take the kiddos skating during Toddlers on Ice at Snoopy's Home Ice in Santa Rosa, Wednesday, 11 am–noon.

Thursday, July 8

  • Make a own silly putty with PBS Kids.
  • Bonjour, it's time for storytime with Emilia! Join her for stories, songs, and rhymes in French on YouTube.
  • Swim in the mineral spring pool at Morton's Warm Springs Resort in Glen Ellen. Open Tuesday–Sunday; advance reservations required.
  • Dine out with the family and enjoy a meal under the lights downtown San Rafael, Thursdays & Fridays, 5–9 pm.

Friday, July 9

  • Explore the trails, the historic village, and the beach at China Camp State Park in San Rafael. Open daily
  • Visit Marin Country Mart in Larkspur for Movie Nights at the Mart: Pixar's Up, 6 pm.
  • See Return of the Jedi outdoors at the Lark Drive-in at the Village at Corte Madera. Friday, 9 pm.
  • Grab a blanket or lawn chair for some fun-filled movie magic under the stars at the Mill Valley Community Lawn: Ferris Bueller's Day Off, 8:30 pm.

U-pick raspberries at Boring Farm in Sebastopol

Saturday, July 10

  • Pick your own organic raspberries at Boring Farm in Sebastopol. Advance registration required.
  • Visit Duckworth Family Farm in Sebastopol for u-pick organic blueberries and blueberry ice cream. Advance registration required.
  • Ride a historic Bay Area interurban train at the Western Railway Museum in Suisuin City. Open weekends 10:30 am–5 pm
  • Learn all about Persian dance (and participate, too!) at Bay Area Discovery Museum. Free with admission; advance tickets required.  
  • Visit the de Young museum in Golden Gate Park for free. Proof of Bay Area residency and advance tickets required. Saturday, 9:30 am–5:15 pm.

Sunday, July 11

  • Get some organic strawberries at one of the many Marin Farmers Markets and make strawberry shortcake.
  • Take the ferry to Angel Island for a day of hiking and exploring.
  • Grab lunch at a food truck at the Marin Country Mart, Larkspur Landing, Sunday, 11 am–3 pm.
  • Get hands-on with art at Marin MOCA's Family Day. Sunday, 11 am–5 pm; advance registration required.
