Ice cream has a long history, dating back to 200 BC when the Chinese had a dessert that was very much like ice cream, a mixture of rice and milk frozen by packing it into snow. Roman emperors also would have ice and snow brought down from mountaintops to be flavored.

July 5th

National Graham Cracker Day

On July 5th, we celebrate National Graham Cracker Day. This day is dedicated to the humble graham cracker, a food item that most people don’t think too much about unless they’re making s’mores or some other graham cracker-based snack.

Graham crackers were invented by Sylvester Graham in the early 19th century. Graham was a Presbyterian minister who was looking to invent a food that would go along with his vegetarian diet, a diet that he believed would make people less likely to engage in what he considered sinful behavior.

The first graham crackers were made using unrefined flour, which made them very bland. During the late 19th century, a variety of bakeries all over the U.S made graham crackers. In 1898, these bakeries formed together to form the National Biscuit Company—also known as Nabisco.

National Graham Cracker Day can be observed by simply picking up some graham crackers and enjoying them straight out of the box or in a recipe. Graham crackers form the basis of many desserts including s’mores, frozen fruit sandwiches, ice cream sandwiches and can even be used for pie crusts.

National Strawberry Sundae Day

There are many fun July food holidays, but this one is the most delicious! National Strawberry Sundae Day is a holiday which falls on July 7th every summer and is the perfect excuse for everyone to make their own strawberry sundae or to go out to their local ice cream purveyor and buy their version of this iconic ice cream dish. #NationalStrawberrySundaeDay

July 8th

Video Game Day

On July 8th, we celebrate Video Game Day. This day is dedicated to recalling the fun and enjoyment we gain from playing games on our various consoles and devices.

Video games have come a long way since their inception in the 20th century. From the first commercially available video game, “Computer Space”, to the Atari Video Computer System (VCS) which introduced the concept of removable cartridges, the evolution of video games has been remarkable.

The Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) revolutionized the home video game market in 1985 with its advanced setup and pad controller. Today, the video game industry is worth over $70 billion worldwide, with almost 60% of all Americans playing video games.

Video Game Day is a great excuse to spend the entire day playing games with your family and friends. It’s also a great day to learn a little bit more about video games and how they came into existence. You can play games on a modern system or you can play one of the classics.

National Chocolate with Almonds Day

On July 8th, we celebrate National Chocolate with Almonds Day. This day is dedicated to the delightful combination of chocolate and almonds, a pairing that many people agree is a winner every single time.

Chocolate and almonds are both fascinating in their own right. Did you know that to make a pound of chocolate, you need approximately 400+ cacao beans? And a cacao tree can produce approximately 2,500 beans, meaning each tree can make enough beans for over 6-pounds of chocolate.

As for almonds, 80% of the world’s almonds come from California. It takes 1.2 million beehives to pollinate California’s almond crop. Interestingly, chocolate manufacturers use 40% of the world’s almond supply.

National Clerihew Day

National Clerihew Day is a holiday that’s observed annually on July 10th and celebrates the legacy and the works of an English novelist and humorist known as Edmund Clerihew Bentley. National Lollipop Day

National Lollipop Day is believed to have been created by the National Confectioners Association. The lollipop itself was invented by George Smith of New Haven, Connecticut in 1908. He named his creation “Lolly Pop” after a popular racehorse of the era, and in 1931, he trademarked the lollipop name.

National Moon Day

On July 20th, we celebrate National Moon Day, a day that commemorates the day man first walked on the moon in 1969. This holiday was proclaimed by U.S President Richard Nixon in 1971 to commemorate the anniversary of man’s first moon landing.

Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin stepped out of Apollo 11 and onto the lunar surface, marking a significant milestone in human history. Since this holiday’s conception, over a dozen U.S States have sponsored resolutions observing it as Moon Day.

The moon has been Earth’s constant companion for the past 4.5 billion years, influencing our tides and even causing seismic activity known as Moon Quakes. National Chili Dog Day

On July 27th, we celebrate National Chili Dog Day, a day that’s all about the delicious combination of a hot dog topped with chili. It is one of my families favorite July holidays.

The chili dog is a beloved comfort food that varies in style depending on the region it’s enjoyed in. Some say it was invented on Brooklyn’s Coney Island, others claim it was born in Los Angeles or Chicago. Regardless of its origin, the chili dog has become a staple in American cuisine.

The history of the chili dog is intertwined with the history of the hot dog itself. Charles Feltman, a street vendor, is credited with the invention of the hot dog, selling dachshund sausages in milk rolls from his wagon as early as the 1860s. He opened a hot dog stand on Coney Island in 1871, selling over 3,600 hot dogs that year.

The chili dog emerged when people began topping their hot dogs with chili to enhance the taste. Today, you can enjoy a chili dog with your choice of onions, pickles, mustard, ketchup, or any other toppings you desire.

National Love is Kind Day

On July 27th, we celebrate National Love is Kind Day, a day that’s all about promoting love, kindness, and respect in our relationships. Be sure to check out our article on 101 Acts of Kindness.

This day was created by Rosie and Sunny Aiello of the Love is Kind Network in 2019. Their mission is to spread the message of love and kindness and to work towards ending domestic violence. National Love is Kind Day is a day to celebrate all of the victims of domestic abuse who have freed themselves from their abuser, to highlight the problem of domestic abuse, and to give voice to those who are still suffering.

Of all the July holidays this is a very special day. It’s also a day to remember those who weren’t so lucky in getting away from their abusers and have suffered and died as a result. This day serves as a reminder that everyone deserves to be treated with love and respect.

On this day, consider donating to organizations that support victims of domestic violence, such as the Love is Kind Fund.
