Although I haven’t seen I Kill Giants yet, I’ve been told that this film features strong women and powerful female characters with an almost entirely female cast. It touches on themes of bullying, standing up for yourself, and finding strength within yourself. If you are a woman, have you ever felt undervalued? When I was growing up, I was known in school as the smart kid. Now that may not seem like a burden to many people, but in my small high school, the cheerleaders and athletes were valued most highly. Being pretty and peppy made girls popular. Girls like me weren’t valued for their talents. It didn’t help that I’m an introvert, someone who doesn’t seek the limelight. I can’t say that I was bullied, but I was ignored -- unless someone really wanted the answers to an assignment. It was a very lonely time. As an adult, I had to do a lot of work on myself to figure out it was okay to be me, and that I shouldn’t be ashamed of being smart. So, I’m anxious to see this movie in the hopes that it will show other girls and women that it’s okay to be who they are, not how others tell them they should be.
