In Medieval times, cushions or chair pads were used to ease the hardness of the wooden stool or chair. These pads not only provided the desired comfort but also came in a variety of colorful patterns and colors. The pads were used in both poor and wealthy homes.

It was the legendary Charles Darwin who added wheels to his chair so that he could get his specimens quicker while in his study. Apart from many things, I believe we, especially the office people should thank Darwin for this particular invention as well.

In the Gothic times, chairs were used as the seats for the clergy in the churches. The ornate designs of these chairs were inspired from the nature. As the fabric covers got added to the chairs, the most prominent and popular pattern was the  fleur-de-lis that looked like local foliage.

As the centuries passed, chairs too got evolved in their designs. In the Victorian era, exotic designs were given to the chairs. It was a common trend to see lacquer-finished chairs with Oriental motifs in rich people's homes.

A rocking chair was another great design that is still quite popular. Check out some of the fun facts related to rocking chairs below:

  • The record for spending the longest time non-stop rocking a rocking chair is held by Dennis Easterling of Atlanta, Georgia. He did it for 480 hours.
  • The world's largest rocking chair is placed in Cuba, Missouri. Its height is 42 feet, 1 inches and total cost of its construction was around $22000.
  • The record for spending longest time non-stop rocking a rocking chair without sleep is 18 days, 21 hours and 40 minutes.

When Darwin introduced wheels to the office chairs, he certainly wouldn't have thought about this crazy thing as "Office chair sports" or "Race of office chairs" that time. However, now we certainly do have something like that to talk about.
The first German Office chair Racing Championship was held in year 2009, and it took place in  Bad Koenig-Zell, Germany. It was a 170 meter race and 70 participants took part in it.
