My name is Michael Busby. I am a divorce and Family Law attorney who practices in Harris and Ft. Bend County Texas. Most of the mediators listed are older attorneys who rely primarily on referrals. Some have websites but most do not and for the most part, spend very little on advertising. This list is not meant to grade in numerical order which mediator is the best. This list is meant to inform the client who may have a mediation set with one of these mediators as to the process and procedures that this mediator uses to conduct the conference. Your lawyer may not be experienced or may have not updated you prior to start of the mediation what to expect, as a result, I have post this blog for information purposes to give you some biographical information on the mediator and the logistics used by that mediators for your mediation.

Jane is short but gets to the point very quickly. She books up fast and meditates 2 to 3 cases per day. She has settled over 6,000 cases. She has a building behind the Cadillac Bar. If you have a truck, park on the street. She has some parking for compact and mid size cars. She typically mediates downstairs. When you mediate at night, she will buy the parties dinner. My office has mediated about 80 times with Jane.

Former associate Judge in 308th of Harris County. Well liked and respected. About $600 per party. I have had some cases with Rick and also used him for mediation. He knows all the judges and their policies. He appears 3 to 5 times a week in court. If you have highly contested facts, it is good to have someone who has been in front of judge on your issue. He gives an objective opinion based on experience and is trusted both as mediator and attorney.

This guy is a former Houston Oiler, he is married to the former Judge in the 247th. He is maybe late 60’s but went to law school late in life, maybe 15 years as a lawyer. Will come to your office. About $350 per party. Carol is about 6 foot 6 inches and very fit. Carol’s wife is somewhat smaller than Carol, maybe she is 5 foot 2 inches. The wife has a temper and can be excited much quicker than Carol. Most of the time he is very passive and non-aggressive. I have always thought this very helpful with a female client who needs a strong man or a father/husband who is very possessive and controlling. By his appearance in the room, and demeanor, he can cool off a hot situation with three to four paragraphs of the spoken word and usually get the parties to agree to terms. Carol also does Amicus work for many of the courts. He takes on some new cases and appears 3 to 5 times a week in court. He will know how the judge will rule based on your facts.

Sarah Razavi Zand

Ms. Zand is Persian and Speaks Farsi.  She is younger than most of the mediators on this list.  Do not let her age deter employing this mediator.  She has been out ten years and is one of the smartest and wittiest lawyers in the courthouse. I use her for most of my middle Eastern and Indian clients.  She has settled some very difficult cases for me, that I doubt another mediator in Houston would be able to get the parties to come together.  She also appears several days per week in the courthouse.  She knows  all the judges and the court staff.

Elaine Shelton

Judge Shelton was the former associate judge in the 311th and also 312th Family Courts of Harris County. She served under Doug Warne and also David Farr. She was a hard ass when it came to procedure. She is seldom late and always ready. I do not believe she maintains an office and she relies primarily on referrals. She retired from the bench sometime in 2012. She started mediations right away. Judge Shelton files up fast. You would have to book your mediation about a month out. She will come to your office and I think she also does mediations out of the Greenway Mediation Center in Houston on Mercer Road. Judge Shelton is respected and trusted.

Fran Brochstein

Fran has been working with families for years. She has mediated thousands of cases. She will do her best to make sure you understand the costs and time required to try a case and why settlement outside of court is ideal. She frequently is appointed as a mediator by the judges when the parties cannot agree. She was a warm and caring personality. She has mediated with over ½ of the Judges in Harris county when they were practicing lawyers. She knows the judges and the outcomes based on your facts at trial. Fran is trusted and well respected.

I have mediated about 10 cases with Frank. He charges about $300 per party. If you want a board certified mediator, Frank would be the cheapest I could find. Frank has some side line business legal insurance for family law. Frank is good, well respected. Seems he appears less in court these days, but has 30 years of practice in family law behind him. He does not excite very easily and will explain the process and likely outcomes to the parties based on his projections of hearing your facts.

About $700 per party, former judge but also serves as a Senior District Judge the Second Administrative Region. Adjunct Professor of Law. Has an Office in Fort Bend County and Harris County. Good for the complex family law case. I have mediated about 10 times with him.

Brad primarily mediates these days. He will stay with you all day and go back and forth to attempt to get you to settle. He is always booked up, thus you will need to look at a month out to set your mediation with him. I think Brad grew up in South America, as his Spanish is excellent with no accent. For your more difficult Latin cases, Brad is the mediator for the job. With both a Board Certification, and Former Judge, he will get your client where he needs to be as to the likely outcome of trial.

My offices uses Myrna for quite a few of our Spanish clients. She is another “hard ass’. But pointed and a closer. The first time I mediated with her did not go well. I think I surprised her by going back. She is a closer and hard working attorney.  Good lawyer who appears almost daily in court and knows how the judge will rule. About $350 per party
