Kids Learn to Read at the Barbershop

– The Fuller Cut Barbershop in Michigan gives a two dollars discount to any child reading aloud while getting their haircut. Ryan Griffin, a father of three, is the barber who brought the program to Fuller Cut. Last August, he began bringing old positive African American books to the shop and word quickly spread about this great initiative.

– “We get a lot of kids coming through. I couldn’t say exactly how many of them we’ve given money to since it started,” said Griffin. In any case, it seems that both parents and children love it: “I typically hand the money to the children, it’s all part of the reinforcement. But it’s not just about reading; they have to tell us or their parents what happened. It’s all about the comprehension,” explained the barber.
