How To Improve Your Dog’s Health To Live Longer

A dog is a pet that becomes very much part of the family. They have their own personality, and they give so much love to their own and provide so many memories during the course of their lifetime. So it’s necessary to make sure that you look after them well so that they can live a long and healthy life. Here are some tips to improve your dog’s health to live longer.

Your Food Is Not Theirs

It’s tempting enough to give them leftovers from your dinner but some of the food we eat is not good for your dog to be eating. They also already have their own food, and if you’re giving them extra, then they’ll just put on weight. Your food is not theirs, so avoid giving them your feed and if they beg, say no. Try to encourage the rest of your household to do the same.

Get Plenty Of Exercise

Having a dog may mean that you yourself are getting more exercise, and it’s imperative that your dog gets the right amount of it too. Every dog is different depending on their breed, so make sure you ask your vet as to how much exercise they should be doing every day. As well as the walks, you should be encouraging them to increase the intensity, and that can be done by throwing a ball or chew toy for them to fetch. Give yourself a routine of going out with your dog every day and make sure that the walk is lasting at least twenty minutes to around an hour. It’s a great opportunity for you to get some fitness and to give yourself time to reflect.

Take Them To Regular Health Checks

Doctors appointments are important for you so you shouldn’t ignore any for your dog. A veterinary check-up is needed most likely on an annual basis, but if anything should crop up that makes your dog act differently, then it’s very important that you book them in to be seen at the vet clinic as soon as you can. Ensure that any medicine is taken when needed, listen to your vet’s comments if there’s anything that you can do to improve your dog’s health in general.

Don’t Forget Their Teeth

A dog’s teeth is one part of the body that you likely don’t see that often. However, you need to be looking after their teeth because they’re not capable of doing it themselves! Plaque that builds up on a dog’s teeth can end up causing dental problems and ill health in general. If you’re able to brush their teeth physically then that’s recommended, however, most dog owners will opt to use dental chews. This helps keep the dog’s teeth clean without having to get in there with a toothbrush.

Having a dog is something that many people brings a new level of joy and to ensure they continue to do that in your life, look after their health. That way, they’ll live for many years to come and provide as many memories with it.
