Tips on Improving the Accessibility for Older Dogs

Older dogs are as cute as can be, but dogs of a certain age face physical conditions that can make navigating a home fairly difficult for them.

Dogs love to play in a home – in their defense, it is their habitat. But playing at an older age may come with unfortunate consequences, considering that there have been studies showing the dangers of letting dogs jump unaided from varying heights (as explained in care2’s article, Prevent Pet Injuries in the Home).

The better you can keep your home safe and accessible for your senior dogs, the more active they will be. This, of course, will help them stay healthy for much longer – something the entire universe needs! This is even more important for dogs that may suffer from hereditary joint issues, as mobility can be quite the ordeal to overcome. The good news is there are numerous tips you can use to improve your home’s accessibility for older dog.

If your dog is reluctant to enter familiar room

One of the first signs of aging for older dogs is reluctance of entering familiar rooms. If your dog has an issue with the flooring, consider adding a non-skid carpet runner in the room. Any slip may cause significant pain for senior dogs. It’s important to address these potential sources of discomfort. In addition, dog boots that have traction on the bottom can also help address the slippery surfaces.

If your dog’s eyesight is going

If your dog is beginning to lose its eyesight, avoid having items on the floor where your dog frequently walks. Rug paths made of a different material from the flooring are helpful when the dog’s eyesight is fading. Help guide your dog along the path using a leash or treat. If your dog has special needs, be sure to talk to your vet about the best methods to accommodate his disability.

If your dog is having trouble with high places

Another fundamental problem for senior dogs involves heights, such as hopping in and out of a vehicle or climbing stairs, couches, beds, and chairs. If your dog is beginning to hang back from hopping in the car, consider using a portable ramp.

Dog ramps for beds can be beneficial to have as it gives your furry friend an access tool if they are having difficulties reaching high and/or lower surfaces. With the dog ramp, an injured or older dog will feel more welcome in your home.

For dog beds that are off the ground or have high sides, try replacing them with a memory foam bed which are soft on the joints and make it easier to enter and exit the bed.

If your dog is having trouble with the stairs

If your stairs are made of wood or marble, chances are they are slippery for your dog. If this is the case, place grip strip downs to help your senior dog. If your dog has serious mobility issues, it’s ideal to block the staircase with a gate to avoid any risk of him falling or tumbling.

If you have an older dog in the house that is suffering from joint conditions or arthritis, then you’ll probably know the risks involved in unnecessary strains for your loving pet. It’s important that your dog is comfortable and is able to move around the house with ease as your dog ages.
