How To Keep Your Dog Cool This Summer

The Summer is finally upon us, and while this gives us great excuse to go out on daylong adventures with our furry companion, it also means that you will need to keep some extra attention on them, because let’s face it, extended periods out in the sun aren’t good for anyone. As humans, we overheat and risk getting burnt or even suffering from some stroke, and that’s no different for our pups either. It is also important that you know that different dog breeds handle the sun a lot better than others, so understanding your dog is key. So you need to ensure that you do all you can to keep them happy, and cool.

Here’s how.

Bring water

Whatever you do, make sure that you never leave the house without water. Bring a cool box to keep it cold and fresh, and regularly offer it out to your dog. There are collapsible bowls that you can buy too, which means you don’t have to worry about trying to feed your dog water straight out of the bottle without spilling it everywhere.

Cool spot

If you’re outside in the sun, and there isn’t any available place in the shade, then you will want to offer your dog cool spots to lay on. This can be done with an ice pack or a wet towel. Better yet, keep a lightly damp towel in the freezer at all times, and whenever you know you’re going out, be it the garden or the park, take it out and encourage your dog to lay on it. This will immediately drop their body temperature so they find instant relief.

Schedule the walk

If it’s super hot out that it’s uncomfortable, it may not be the best time to take your dog out for a Walk and a play, so try and opt for either an early morning walk, or later in the evening once the sun has settled and isn’t hanging above your heads anymore. If it’s too hot, your pup won’t enjoy it anyway because they will overheat and become dehydrated. You know when this happens because they will begin to pant a lot heavier, their tongue will hang out, and their eyes will appear sunken in a little.

Somewhere to swim

If you and your dog do want to go out for the day, then go somewhere that has shallow water that your dog can play in. This will all depend on where you live and what you have access to. You may be within close proximity of the sea, and in that case, you can spend the day at the beach. But if not, a lake will do. Or even a river, but you will need to make sure it’s clean and there is no strong current that risks pulling your dog under.

Now you have some ideas, make sure that you implement them into your summer routine. You can also find other helpful pieces of advice from dogsbynina about grooming, food, and the overall well being of your precious pup.
