Homeschool Week in Review Week 4 – 6 – Catching Up

The last couple weeks have been really busy for us. Last weekend we added a new addition to our house. His name is Max, and he is a 2 month old Golden Retriever. He certainly has kept us busy. So I thought instead of missing out on what we have been doing. I would just include it in one post so I can keep track of things.

For science we are still studying space. I took a couple days and we Learned about rockets. We tried to watch the launch of the rocket going to the international space station but I think we had other plans that kept us from watching it. We also talked about the Space Shuttle Challenger as well. We ended that class with a chalk pastel drawing of a rocket launch. We also have been learning about the sun again and we did talk about comets. We are still continuing to learn about the sun.

For geography we studied the states of Delaware and Virginia a little more closely. My uncle came to visit and for his birthday we picked a food from the state of Virginia. She picked Chocolate Silk Pie. This recipe was from a department store that was famous for Chocolate Silk Pies, and it closed it’s doors in 1990. It turned out delicious! We also learned about Washington DC. We watched a video about the how the Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers came about. I also learned that Washington DC is the only place that is regulated by Congress and not Governors. I found that to be interesting as I was watching the West Wing and the Mayor mentioned that the school was regulated by Congress and it was the only place in the United States. Just thought that was an interesting tie bit! To end our study my daughter drew the Lincoln Memorial out of Chalk Pastels.

For writing I went back to learning paragraph writing as I felt that needed more work. We have been making what is called a T Chart to brain storm for our paragraphs. We also color code the paragraphs as well. We will spend another week or so on this. I had my daughter pick out and draw her characters that she is going to use in her own writing. I also had her plan out the setting as well.

We did meet for our First 3D art class. We made paper sculptures and the kids shaped them the way they wanted and they used masking tape to hold parts. Then the kids put water putty on them and we set them aside to dry. My daughter decided she wanted to do a Dragon Fly. At our next class the kids will be painting them and then I have another project for them to do.

We also get together with our friends on Wednesdays. We normally go to lunch and then work on science projects and history. One week the girls learned about salt water density. They did an experiment with an egg, water, and salt….at first the egg sunk in just plain water…as they added salt the egg floated higher and higher.

This past Wednesday we went to a Mexican restaurant for lunch. They have the most amazing chimichanga’s! My daughter tried shrimp for the first time….it was rather funny as she seemed afraid to try it at first. She discovered that she wasn’t a fan of shrimp.

After lunch our science experiment was crystal making. That was a process but it was fun watching the girls. The crystals have been growing pretty fast. One of the girls made three mini’s and they were blue and the other made two medium sized crystals that I think are suppose to be red or pink. Can’t wait to see them when they are finished.

My uncle was still in town so I had asked if after we were finished with our activities that we could bring the girls to the hotel to go swimming. So we ended our day with swimming…..I think these two besties were worn out after almost 2 hours of swimming!

We also took a trip to the Red Mill, it is in Waupaca. The Red Mill has been around for a while. It has a covered wooden bridge and a chapel. Most people have weddings there. There is a river that runs through it as well. It’s beautiful in the fall. I wish there had been more color! It was nice to see it and say I have been there. I didn’t see the water fall that I have seen in pictures….I have to wonder if it is because the river levels are higher because of all the rain.

Finally the last of the news….we got a puppy! He is a golden retriever! His name is Max, and he is 2 months old. He is such a cute little guy. Potty training hasn’t really be terrible. He is actually using the puppy pads. He absolutely loves being outside and playing the yard.

Hope you all had a great couple weeks!!
