Week 2: Homeschool Week in Review

I can’t believe we already just finished our second week of school. We are still adjusting and trying to figure things out yet. I suppose you’re wondering just what we have to figure out. We have a few outings planned during the week, so in order to stay on track with our work we need to get up earlier to get things done. Two days in a row my Daughter got most of her stuff done before we even had to leave. That was amazing in itself. My son he only had to wait on me one day to give him his stuff and do a couple things with him. All in all I think we are adjusting ok.

This week for science my daughter was continuing to work on space. This weeks topic was the sun. We did end up doing a couple extra things with the planets though. Monday we did a crayon resist drawing of outer space. Then on Tuesday we did Fizzy Planets. We did our little project live on facebook so it tells you exactly what you need in order to this project. My daughter picked the earth as we had both blue and green food coloring. We shaped a ball out of baking soda and water. She made it look like the planet earth. Then we created a chemical reaction with vinegar and watched it melt and fizz. You can watch it here.

My son has decided that he would like to watch the Blue Planet 2 for science. I have some worksheets and experiments planned out for him to start next week to go along with the episodes we will be watching. Will post those next week!

History we had to change up this week as we are going to have one extra person join us for history In order to be ready for the next week…we watched documentaries instead. My daughter had to pick something out with dinosaurs of course! My son continued watching his documentary about the Cold War. I think the episode was about the Iron Curtain.

On Monday we went to a Homeschool Picnic. This was the start of our year with our homeschool group. The kids ate lunch and then they had some get to know you games. My daughter had so much fun. It was hard to keep track of her as she was bouncing all over the place with different kids. It was nice to see her socialize. It was also really nice to be able to talk to other moms.

Tuesday was a pretty busy day. In the morning we had chess club at the library. The only thing is the chess boards went missing so the kids played other board games instead. After chess club we went to lunch with some friends. After lunch we headed home as we still had one more thing to complete. The last thing to complete was our Nature Study. The Nature study this month is about sand. We read a book about how sand is formed and the different types of sand. We went to the beach to grab a sample of the sand for next week. While we were there we walked by the water and enjoyed watching the huge waves crash. It was a windy day and there was a beach hazard, so you know the waves were huge. We did see some wind surfers there. What better way to end our school day on a windy day…..we decided to go kite flying. I think we had a lot of laughs with one of the kites. It would swirl all crazy and then crash….after multiple attempts to get it in the air and stay there we decided to go to storage and get our better kite. We were able to get that up in the air.

Wednesday we were suppose to go the zoo and play kick ball but the weather had different plans for us…..it had rained/stormed so it was cancelled.

Friday my son had an appointment and after I asked him if he wanted to go see The Wall That Heals. It is a replica of the Vietnam Wall and it travels. I couldn’t get a decent picture of the whole wall. So I grabbed a picture of a name we were looking for. Along some of the panels right next to them were roses with pictures of those who have fallen. I figured this might be a once in a life time thing for him to see and I took him. I have seen the Vietnam Wall in Washington DC. There was also a mess hall set up with items on display.

Friday night my daughter had asked me if she could teach me to draw using bases. It was kind of a trip because she said at times she didn’t know how to explain so I would have to watch and try to attempt what she was doing. I don’t think I did too bad…..although I know practice makes perfect! My daughters drawing is on the left and mine is on the right.

Hope you all had a great and exciting week! What was the highlight of your week?
