Week 1 – Homeschool Week In Review

I must have blinked and summer is over and the first day of School is here. I feel that is incredibly how fast summer has gone by. I really can’t believe we just finished our first week of school. This will be the last year that my son will have a First Day of School picture. Did you notice the huge grin on his face? Yep that grin marks his senior year of high school. My Daughter is in sixth grade already. My oh my I am feeling old. They are growing up so fast!

We didn’t really have any fun activities planned for the first week. We jumped into our curriculum and stuck to all the core subjects. As you can see as I write this post, I will have no other pictures of what we have been working on. Now this upcoming week, I will have a few Now just to figure out the balance of getting everything accomplished in one day and being able to enjoy the fun things with the homeschool group.

All in all I think this week went by well. I am really proud of my son as I don’t have to grumble as I am waking him up in the morning. He gets up and takes a shower and comes upstairs ready to start his day. He is pretty much done by noon every day. Shocking because this is not how it use to go. My daughter on the other hand, I have to fight to wake her up.

Math and language arts are just that…..nothing really exciting to talk about there. We are doing something a little different for reading this year. I had the kids pick out a book that interested them to read….when they are finished they will have to write a book report…. they don’t know that part yet….

For science I have one working on marine biology and one working on space. My son has been learning about the different oceans and currents this week. We also learned a little bit about what animals are in each ocean as well. This upcoming week might be a little more interesting. My daughter is big into space. This week we learned about the planets. What I found interesting was Mars has two moons that are both irregular shaped. They look more like, well I am not so sure how to describe them. Many scientists think that they are really asteroids that became trapped in orbit.

I think I even had a moment last week where I wanted to pull out my hair….I had went to an IEP meeting with a friend to make sure that she wasn’t pushed around and that she was satisfied with what they were talking about. After the meeting we went to breakfast. Well that totally threw my day off. My daughter was working on her planet book and it took her two hours…..two hours just to write a fact about each planet…..no way should that have taken that long. When she was finished I looked at her and said “I don’t know whether to be mad that you took two hours or happy that you took your time!”. She looked at me and laughed…..I seriously wasn’t trying to be funny……I honestly didn’t see the humor…..

My daughter is working on geography and each day she has a new state to do some research on… after she is finished with her sheet we switch over to the map to find the state. Once she completes all 50 states I think I am going to have her pick her four favorite states and we will do an activity and make a food from those states. I just don’t have the time to add that in to our day at the moment. I do plan on continuing and we will then get into other countries.

History I am really enjoying with my son. He is interested in The Cold War. I had no idea that it went on that long. I really didn’t know what it was to be honest. It seems it was more a power of words than anything. Yes I do realize there is more to it than just power of words. It lasted from 1946 – 1991. We read a few things about it. This upcoming week we are watching some documentaries about it.

This are pretty much the highlights of our week. Nothing really exciting to report. Next week I should have more pictures on what we are working on and the extra fun things we do.

Hope you all had a great first week of school! What was the highlight of your week?
