Maker Lab: Cool Circuits

Friday I took my daughter to a Maker Lab at one of the local libraries. The theme of this Maker Lab was called Cool Circuits. It was set up by station. The child could pick which station they wanted to work at. There was one station with a Star Wars Robot that you put together and controlled. There was another station called Snapino. This station was using circuit boards and coding. There was another one and I don’t remember the exact name. They took food and made music out of it. There was one more and I don’t remember off hand what that one was.

My daughter started and ended at the Snapino station. The first three projects you sat at the table and used only the pieces and the instruction book. At the fourth project then you took your pieces to the computer to code them. Each project you did something different. For example you could have done alternate lights, blinking lights, and more.

My daughter did this on her own for the most part. She did work with the librarian at times when she started the coding. It was great to see the two of them so involved. I would wait until she called me over to take a video of what she had done. The excitement in her eyes was something. She was totally engrossed in this. I also noticed she was very proud of herself for figuring this out. This opened a whole new set of doors for us.

Since my daughter seemed to enjoy this so much, I have decided to purchase this set, so she can continue working on the projects. One thing that I was really proud of her with was the fact that she was curious and moving parts around to see if she could get different outcomes. One thing I really liked about the projects that come with it, is that it also gives them options for further learning. You can do different things with the projects for different outcomes.

I was happy that this opened a whole new door for us. It really got my daughter interested in circuits as well as coding. We also have a Ozobot but we haven’t explored that yet. I am thinking she will be ready to want to explore that soon.

Are there any coding curriculum that you have tried that your children seem to like? I would really like to hear about it.
