Homeschool Week in Review – Week 1 Back To Full Time Schedule

We started back to our full time schedule last week Tuesday. Last week marked a year that my whole world was turned upside by a cancer scare. Each month it has been something since my surgery. When I want to get past it and move on, I can’t because something else pops up and the whole grieving cycle starts all over again. Our year is starting like last year. We had this great start and then I went in for my imaging. Well last year it wasn’t so good. Tomorrow I go in again for my imaging. I have no idea how it will turn out or if I have to go for an MRI or not. It really has been a tough year. For the first time in a year I finally have some NORMAL back into my life. I have a routine/schedule to accomplish each day. I have missed that so much! It is an incredible feeling!

This year my son is in 11th Grade. I can’t believe how fast time has gone. This year he wants to focus his studying in coding/programming. The other two things of interest for this year a history of music and we are going to work on stop motion and other video editing things.

This year my Daughter is in 5th Grade. The area of interests she has are music, programing, flight, and animation.

We started off the year with a yummy treat. I just made some cookie bars and wrote the first day of school on it. Just something fun to kick off our day. I have a upcoming post I will share with you on what we did the Friday before we started. I call it our NOT BACK to school day. It is a day of fun!

This past week my daughter started a new math curriculum. We are using Math Lessons For A Living Education. The lessons are short each day but she is really enjoying it so far. Some of this is Review for her this year. Towards the end of the year it won’t really be review any more and we will be moving on. It is building her confidence in math so I am happy. My son has no real math curriculum at the moment. We are working on Living Skills with math. We have been working on money. We will be working on that for a while until he can grasp the concept better. I did see some gains last year so I am pretty sure we will make great gains this year.

My son didn’t really have a set history curriculum as I am still working on finding the right one. We watched a documentary last week on Area 51. It was pretty interesting as I didn’t know how much thought went into Area 51. We always joked it was studying UFOS but there is so much more to it. It was testing topic secret things, such as drones and air planes. This week we are going to start the Attack on Pearl Harbor. I purchased the lap book from Hands of a Child. It will take us about three weeks to finish. My daughter is working on geography. We are using the Do-It-Yourself Homeschooling the United States. However, I have been adding some other stuff in. We are currently working on Alabama. My daughter wanted to make one of the monuments in Minecraft so I let her.

My daughter is continuing to work on Biology this year for science and she is really enjoying it. We did a really neat experiment last week. She had to go outside to get a leaf. We used a Dichotomous Key to identify the tree. We found one on the DNR website. You start out by deciding if it is a deciduous or coniferous tree. Then you identify the branches. You then observe the leaf. It asks you a series of questions to get your answer. We had to do it twice because she got the branches wrong the first time. She originally thought she had the oak leaf but it was a maple leaf. I didn’t tell her because I wanted her to get the answer for herself. We may try it with other leaves we find on our nature walks. My son is currently working on volcanoes. We have studied the types of volcanoes and a brief introduction. We will be doing some experiments after we finish the book we are working on now.

My daughter is currently reading the book Esperanza for literature. We have been working on punctuation. She blew me away as we never really studied quotation marks and she knew exactly what they were and where they go. We also have been working on commas. She has done some copy work this week. My son is currently reading on of the book he has picked out for reading. He has been working on capitalization this week. Both the kids have been using Brave Writer for writing. This week they have been writing sentences with picto codes. That has been both fun and interesting.

The kids both have a cooking Class each week. My daughter helped me make dinner one night. She wanted to make cookies but it was a long day. So this week she will get to make up for it. My son made oyster crackers. He absolutely loves this snack! It was easy and quick for the first week of school.

The kids did their programming classes this week. One uses Tynker and the other uses Coda Kids. This is one class that I don’t give a time limit on for my son. I let him go until he has enough. This is probably his longest class. We do this class two days a week. My daughter well she could spend hours on it. She is also taking a class on coding in scratch. She will be getting into making her own flappy birds app. She is really excited about that.

To finish off our week we went to…well I am not exactly sure what they call it. There are different art galleries that open once a month on a Friday night. Some have activities you can do for a cost. Others you can just admire the work. We went to one of the new galleries to check out the art. It was amazing! We also went to Raku night at the pottery place that my daughter did pottery this year. I did pick out a piece to glaze. My daughter had her gnome that she had to glaze. The glaze was in Raku. The interesting thing about this is you have no idea how it is going to turn out. That is the fun part. Mine turned out pretty neat but not as neat as I wanted it to. So depending on how the weather is next month on a Friday will depend if they do the Raku night or not. I hope it cooperates as I want to try again with different glazes. I  loved how mine turned out don’t get me wrong. I think my daughters turned out great!

So all in all we had a wonderful week! We got things accomplished. I am looking forward to another great week!
